Penney’s Straw with gold fibers 7 1/4
Penney’s Straw 7 1/4
Natural Straw with gold fiber diamond weave
4 inch crown
3 1/4 brim
3/8 leather/gold band
This unusual Penney’s straw hat arrived a few months back with a group of old westerns. It has a very unique weave that mixes natural color straw with a gold filament in a diamond pattern. The 4 inch nicely ventilated crown sports a sort of “dual fire” crease with a bit of a mule kick in the front. A nice wide 3 1/4 brim and a 3/8 inch leather and gold hat band. The sweatband indicates it was St Louis made. Maybe Langenberg/Lion or Bee Hats? This one is fairly unusual and I kinda like it. If it weren’t so loose at 7 1/4 I might keep it for the nice shade on a hot summer day. If I can’t move it along. Maybe some foam pads.

Continuing coverage of the 9 mystery hats, I grabbed this hat that at first did not stand out to me. Mostly because it fits a spot in my collection that is fairly covered already... brown 60sish stingy... and it was probably going to be one size too big. The moment I plunked it on my head... I realized a couple things. First... it fit perfectly. Second... this was a really nice hat! It is not marked Kitten Finish as my 50s Resistol is (at least I don’t think so... the sweatband stamping is smeared to almost unreadable. But it really does share the same kinda hand to the felt. I love the two inch Cavanagh edge brim. There is probably a reason I’ve added a few hats of this styling. They just feel comfortable to me.

It's been a while since I got a new hat, but I came to the realization that in my quest to keep my daily activity streak alive, I needed a hat to go along with two of my climate-specific jackets. I hesitated for a while, since it seemed a bit garish at first, but then I said, "What the heck? Please yourself; nobody else cares." So, having two other Bailey Tino fedoras (in olive and wine) I added 'scarlet' (Bailey just calls it 'red').

Great find, Joe! With that squared off horseshoe crease and lurex woven into the straw I'd say that one's from sometime in the late 50s through the 60s. It's definitely a killer and I'd jump all over it if it were a little bigger.

Hat number 3 of the Mystery 9 is from a pretty much unknown brand Royal Crest. I Really like the unusual felt color. It just a warmish grey... but as you look it it some plum undertones come out in it. The felt is a bit worn especially in the pinch but that just give it a bit of character. At first this 7 1/8 hat was quite loose... but after playing with the crease some it settled down and fit fairly well.

In my opinion the Borchert Berlin W. logo is definitely a standout. There is no other company mark but I certain the hat was sourced by Borchert Berlin W.. I have two other Borchert Berlin W. Soft Felts from the same time period and appear to be made by the same source.

Steve, Thank you! They were located at 157 Friedrichstrasse Berlin W. up to WWII. P. & C. Habig Wien had a location 82a Friedrichstrasse that also didn't survive WWII.
Steve, in 2018, I was up and down those streets presenting their many Berlin histories for my youngest daughter.

Dark Olive Green/Brown Felt
5 inch crown with cattleman’s crease
3/4 light yellowish green contrasting grosgrain ribbon
2 7/8 brim with raw edge and lanyard grommets.
Hat number 4 from the Mystery Box 9. Diverging to a bit wider brim with a little bit of western flair today. This Stetson 3X beaver in person shifts in color anywhere from very deep dark olive green to more of a brown. The green color seems to be one my phone camera just does not want to handle very well so I did my best with it. The 2 7/8 brim has a raw edge and grommets for a strap which has been stowed across the front of tHe crown blackening the 3/4 contrasting mid ribbon underneath... one of the grommets is missing. The crown with its cattleman’s crease reaches to 5 inches as shaped. There are no manufacturing tags under the very dark brown to black sweatband. I would estimate late 1960s to 70s.
This one here is probably closest to the richest green color it gets. (Pay no attention to the hat on the right.. which may or may not be posted soon

Here you can see the blackening of the ribbon under the leather strap. I don’t know if this strap was used as a chin strap or to slide down the back of the head for extra support in wind. As it is really short.. though it could be unbuckled and extended out.
