Just watched the "The Big Sleep" with Bogart and Bacall. A scene where Bogie gets beat up, he falls, hat comes off. It lands upside down. I freeze the frame and guess what ...it is a Royal Stetson. Very cool.

Awesome! I've been trying to get a good look at that for a while now but my DVD player has no zoom feature and I couldn't make it out. Thanks a lot.

Screen Capture

Had to break out the DVD and have a look :)

I am fascinated by the glimpses of hat liners in old films. It's always interesting to see what they actually wore. Silvereed and Orion, I appreciate the work you did on this.

This looks like no other "Royal Stetson" liner I've ever seen before.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if this were a unique liner that was specially made to increase the odds that "Royal Stetson" might flash a time or two in the film...

I froze the frame years ago with that very scene. The hat is a Royal Stetson St. Regis. Very common hat worn back then. The costumer would have picked a hat that a detective or private eye would have worn.

Who knows what type of hat Bogie really wore as his personal favorite. He is featured in the Dunlap hat ads....

My screen freeze was on a standard tube tv with dvd. Not HDTV. I bet you can see where it was made using that technology.

Silvereed - I use VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) to play DVDs and other media on my computer. Free and non-proprietary. One of the features is "snapshot." You can then enlarge the image in your favorite image editor. I like to use TheGimp (http://www.gimp.org/) myself.

Cheers

Edit: Andykev - Truly. So far Casablanca is the only HD-DVD classic film I know of, and I hear the high definition print is simply amazing (http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/casablanca.html). If the studios start releasing more classic films in HD...I may just have to find a way to get a high definition DVD player. I don't have an HD TV, but my computer monitor is a 24" Dell that can do 1080p high def!

Any stock Apple computer will do screen grabs as well.

Did Bogie use a costumer, or did he bring along his own clothes like Cary Grant did? Now, I have read on good authority that his iconic trench from Casablanca ended up in the costume department before all of those clothes were 'rescued' in the early 1970s.
