BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE 1960s OVERCOAT, TAILORED BY HICKEY-FREEMAN FOR F.R. TRIPLER OF NEW YORK CITY.
From a line of coats so lovely that F. R. Tripler took special care to advertise it!

This is absolutely wonderful!
I recently outlined (on my FB page, WaterhollowTweed) an account of the history of F. R. Tripler... a New York retailer so staid and old-world that it made Brooks Brothers look positively racy. As you'd expect from such an establishment--and Tripler was most definitely Establishment!--the clothing offered was impeccable.
And it was no more impeccable that the suits and coats that Tripler commissioned from Hickey-Freeman. Tripler was so proud of its Hickey-Freeman coats thatr it took out advertisements procliaming their virtues--and if Tripler did this you know they're impressive! But you don't have to take Tripler's word for this: The clothing that Hickey-Freeman made for Tripler was so quintessentially upper-class American that it has made its way into the collection of the Metroplitan Museum of Art.
I'm thus delighted to offer this beautful Hickey-Freeman coat that was made for sale at F. R. Tripler.
Dating from the late 1960s--around the same period as the advertisement featured below--this beautiful wool coat is a highly functional item of clothing. Thick, heavy, and warm, it is in incredible condition given its age--it was likely reserved for "best" by its original owner, worn sparingly and lovingly looked after. Its sole flaw is trivial--a loose thread (shown) that attaches the middle button to the front of the coat.
Cut as a classic single-breasted coat this fastens with three front buttons. It is fully canvassed and fully lined and has a single center vent. The cuffs have two rnamental buttons--as you'd expect from a very Ivy retailer such as Tripler's! The coat features pick stitching on the lapels and a lovely, deep, on-seam interior pocket--designed to preserve an elegant silhouette even when your wallet is inside.
It was Union Made in the USA--in Hickey-Freeman's original factory at Rochester, opened in 1912.
A coat of this quality would easily retail in excess of $1,000 at today's prices--possibly quite a bit more. And it wouldn't have the history or provenance of this beauty.
