Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

Hmm i've have a quite a few comments, most positive im glad to say.

Mostly from the older generation and a couple from young teens.

My favourite was a few months ago, whilst walking to the tube station in a pencil skirt and shirt combo with seamed stockings an elderly lady who was behind me caught up to me and commented on the stockings, saying how lovely it was to see young girls dressed well, not in those low rise jeans with thongs hanging out!

She even went as far as to ask where she could get some seamed stockings for herself!

It left me with a spring in my step

sunnygal- i quickly realised that! and for that very reason, I was blushing so much, I'm surprised my head didnt just explode right there.

straightseamgal- I love it when compliments come from the older generation. Even when it's just an elderly lady smiling and choosing to sit on the seat on the bus next to me, even though she doesn't really need to.

Over the weekend, I went to visit this awesome diner with Mr. Sable... We were both dressed in vintage and just fit in nicely with the scenery... We went to go pay for the bill and one of the servers looked at me and said: "I really love your outfit - is there a special occassion you're dressed up or is this just your style?" I smiled and told her its just my style. I left with a goofy grin on my face. lol

Lately I have had a number of very young (teens) guys telling me that they love the look. I find this both flattering and amusing, and always tell them thank you

I recently started a new job in a school and one of the teachers there described my look as "part beatnik, part goth."

Now, I love this teacher, but NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. Nothing against goths, but I don't see a bit of goth in my PINK puffy-sleeved tops, a-line skirts, and vintage-esque heels. I have no idea where beatnik comes in. [huh]

It always makes me feel so awkward -- I have to tell them that I like the 20s and 30s then they never know what to say to me.

I'm always being mistaken for a vegetarian, too. Again, nothing against them and I LOVE me some vegetarian dishes, but I love my bacon and sushi, too!

Goth now means dressed differently

I've heard this term used, not especially in a bad way, to talk about anyone who is dressed up or even in any style other than t-shirt and bluejeans. Beatnik? Maybe thinking 1950s. Yes, people have decades mixed up. My beloved late boss used to describe me as an 'exotic pixy'.

When someone tells me I look like I stepped out of the 1920s I don't even try to correct them even though I wearing 40s or 50s or whatever, I accept the daily compliments.

That's funny about the vegetarian! People ceratinly are interested in you.

Yea, I think the "beatnik" thing is people not knowing which decade to place me in! And the "beatnik" generation borrowed from the flappers, I'm sure!

*sigh*
For once, though, I'd like for someone to call me a flapper.

People think I'm an artist, too! Funny thing is, I can't draw for squat! But I don't discourage them from thinking that way

The last week or so I've been in a really funky mood...really tired, terrible mood swings, and really irritable. I realized that all last week I didn't dress up once, let alone in anything vintage-y.

Yesterday I wore this dress...

...with shoes similar to these (mine are all black and peep toe, and the soles are pink with killer heels)...

...and my hair similar to my avatar pic..

....and I felt like a million bucks!

I also received a lot of complements, which is always a good mood-booster! Yay, vintage

Kim: See and people make fun of us for caring a bit about our appearances! I don't know how many times I've tried to explain to people that i just feel better when I take those few extra moments to fix myself. For me it's almost therapy. Cheaper anyhow. lol

So yesterday I went down the PX and as I was leaving and older gentleman commented on how he liked my 50's outfit. I was actually wearing a skirt from the mid forties and a puff sleeve blouse but I said thank you and continued walking and he kept up with me and kept commenting on my 50's look complete with the 50's hair. So finally I very politely told him, well actually sir it's really more 40's (my hair was in rollls and fluff for heavens sake and definately NOT 50's) but that it was very sweet of him. He kept insisting and wouldn't go away so I explained to him that the 50's were more crinolines and big skirts and that my style leaned much more heavily to the tailored look and lines of the 40's. He then told me "Well I was born in 44 and the women where I lived looked just like you up until the late 50's" He told me how he'd grown up in the back country.
Then I remembered I was in Alabama lol I guess the fashions of the 50's took a little longer to get to his neck of the woods [huh]

I had the funniest thing happen to me this morning--I'm still sort of reeling from it. Also, I'm sharing this story to show the power of vintage rather than to boast.

Yesterday I wore one of my favorite 40s dresses because I was meeting KittyT after work and thought it would be fun to dress up (I had a great time with her by the way—fun to meet folks face to face). I work in a law library within a large firm and I noticed a couple of stares yesterday but I didn’t think much of it; my workplace is so conservative that if a man wears anything other than a white shirt heads swivel.

So this morning I’m at the front of the library dealing with the newspapers because our secretary is on vacation. My hands are covered in newsprint and I'm feeling rather grimy when one of the senior lawyers strides in very purposefully and heads for the dictionary. He’s a good guy but all business and not known for small talk. He flips through a couple pages and then notices me.

“You were wearing a green dress yesterday, weren’t you?” he said, with a slightly accusatory tone.

“Yes, that’s right” I responded, wondering if I’m going to have to pull out my “why I wear vintage” spiel. He leaned forward a little and said

“You looked absolutely gorgeous in that dress; we all thought so. I thought someone should tell you, so I’m telling you. You looked too good for this place. Gorgeous”.

“Well, thanks” I sort of stammered out, shocked both at the compliment and the fact that I’ve never heard him string this many words together at once. What made it rather funny was his trial lawyer cadence, it was like he was presenting evidence to the jury or something. We chatted a bit and he took his leave.

The compliment was lovely but the whole thing was a little surreal.

I have realized that a lot of my co-workers pay attention to when I'm dressed vintage/vintage-inspired. I get a lot of comments on my hair, which I'll wear vintage, even when I'm wearing "regular" clothes; every one looks forward to when I wear my dresses and skirts - one lady asked when I was going to wear the black and white dress again because I looked like I stepped out of an old movie! I'm still debating whether to wear the seamed stockings - it'd look great with the dress, but I'm not sure how well-received they'd be. [huh] I guess I'll just have to try it and find out!

Yes, the "we" was intriguing...

It felt wonderful but I have to admit I wanted to do the "looks around, points to self, says 'me?' incredulously" at first. It was also nice that I feel comfortable with the guy--there wasn't anything inappropriate about it.

Before I say anything else, a hello to everyone.

As you can all apparently tell, I'm new here.

Enough with my intro though.

I have to say that the last time I dressed up in a vintage inspired outfit, I did get a few compliments from friends. At that time I had a '40s inspired outfit.

However, the compliments I remember the most are from professors, and an older lady I knew from a class. At that time I had a '30s look. When they asked me questions, they just seemed more genuinely interested.

Nonetheless, imoldfashioned, I agree with everyone when they say how wonderful the compliment was.

I wear mostly vintage inspired suits and dresses that I make, so being a college student (in Indiana mind you) for the last few years I've had lots of comments. This last year I've met a number of people who had said they "knew of me" or had seen me around campus which came as a bit of a suprise to me! I actually got asked to help with a fashion show last year because of it. The most fun I've ever had was at commencement where our head of department gave me permission to tailor my gown to fit like a 40's dress. As everyone said, they wouldn't have expected any less from me.
