That is funny! A tough crowd huh? The best compliment I ever received was while wearing a bowler hat. Some guy in Manhattan told me he liked my hat and wanted to take a picture! It was a nice gesture and I obliged him. I joked with my wife that I am hoping not to show up on some Retro homosexual website "village people style"...There is the guy dressed like an Indian, a construction worker, and a British gentleman! LOL

I was at a wedding a few weeks ago. I brought along a homburg to top off the outfit---because the rented tux looked so stinky it needed some type of distraction when I was walking the street to get to the venue.
Well, one of the groomsmen wanted to see how it looked so I put it on. The wedding photographer ran over and took a picture before I could get it off! And no, I am not going to post the picture even if they give it to me. That tux or whatever you call it was horrible. :kick:

Not sure at all, it was The Village, N.Y.C....

I have a wedding to attend in July. Depending on what I wear, a homburg sounds like a good choice. Hats do tend to cover the flaws in bad clothing choices..

'Stupid Happens' is the expression I use in this case.

I guess you did the right thing. Me, I would have given him an earful. I do not like the idea of helping to nurture ignorant teenagers to become ignorant adults. I can be a b@st@rd like that! :rage:

Yeah, I would have done that too. There is a line between just some joking banter and outright asking for it. In a civil society, it requires that we act civil and expect the same thing back. If you act like an idiot, you should expect the same thing back as well.
I can take the one gangster comment---which I hate the most---but if they keep cajoling then it becomes different. :rage: Teenagers are easy. They are so insecure that you could make fun of their hair and they will run away crying.

I was in Wally's yesterday picking up some Star Wars figures with my kids, and a gallon of milk. I spotted a pleasant looking blond female aged about 22 years, approaching me head on. She had on an Ivy League cap, looked to be a brown tweed. She stopped me and said, "I love your cap, where did you get it?" I was wearing a Miller linen 8/4 cap gray plaid. I replied, "I like yours too, this is a Miller..." She then commented that she found my entire ensemble to be attractive, and wished she could get her boyfriend to dress similarly. I was dressed rather casually, I did not have to work, so I was not wearing my usual khakis and chambray. I was wearing the cap as mentioned, a Dickies bowling shirt, khaki knee length shorts and black converse high top Chucks.

I was at the top of my game for the rest of the day, I just wish my dear wife had been there to see it. It may have given he a deeper appreciation for me and my sense of style.

Some recent experience

I live in an area that is transitioning from ghetto to hipster habitat. The last two weekends my hats have drawn comments from both types.

Two weeks ago, I was walking home one Saturday night with my wife, wearing a seersucker suit and my cheaper PB Montecristi. As we walked by an outdoor cafe, a young, slightly drunk, hipster chick looked up from her dinner to slur how much she liked my hat. Last Saturday, I was walking with my dad wearing a DB blazer, pistachio summer flannels and my nicer PB Montecristi. I passed a group of men in full ghetto regalia and the leader started a long excited rant about how cool the hat was, the look was pimpin, the colors were workin, . . . and on. I am at least a dozen years too old to understand all of it, but it took a while for him to get it all out. In both cases, a thank you and a smile seemed the only response.
