The Great Beer Thread

There is a place I need to visit it Pittsburg some time. From the blip I caught on the television a couple years ago it is an old Catholic church that was going to be razed and the two guys bought it and converted it into a brewery and a restaraunt. It's called "the Church Street Brewery" or something of the like. I guess the food is amazing and the beer is just as good. The brewing vats are right on on the stage area in the front of what used to be a sanctuary. All very tasteful. Not to mention they saved a beautiful building by starting this place.

Theres a small brewery in Munster Ind. called Three Flyods that makes some amazing beers. Check out the Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout at 13%.

Ah, a thread I like...

PBR - I knew only one person who drank PBR...we used to tease her mercilessly. I called her out of sympathy the day they stopped bottling it, but I hadn't heard they started again. That explains why I still see it for sale...and kills the theory that it's old stock that they STILL can't sell.

As for me...? I have a degree in beer...but this is what I like:

-- Coronas w/ a couple limes - a standby in Cali - limes cut the bubbles, and with a couple limes I consider it 'health food'. (Hey, if Jess can have an oatmeal brew for breakfast...) But don't stick the lime in the bottle, eh, we don't need the bitter rind. I'll squeeze 'em myself.

-- pint o' Bass never steers you wrong. I can't drink a Guinness straight myself, but a Black & Tan is a nice drink.

-- If there's no Bass, then it's Sam's (Sam Adams), and if not that, SOMETHING AMBER. Not much for 'reds', like a Killian.

-- Pete's Wicked Ale used to be a pretty good alternative for a Sam's. They had more variations, too, but appear to have backed off. Too bad, too, their variations were nice. One year their Oktoberfest brew was a caramel beer...mmm...that went nice w/ a vanilla cigar.

-- Kirin Ichiban when we're having sushi.

(Skip the regular Kirin.)

-- Lederman's Framboise Lambic for some special occasions...a raspberry Belgian ale. (Lambics are Belgian ales that are infused w/ fresh fruits halfway through the fermentation process. GREAT. 'Framboise' means 'raspberry'. There's peach and cherry variations as well...more, but I forget.) A bottle w/ a cork in it!

-- ...and Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin Ale for sitting on the bench out front handing out candy on Halloween.

This stuff tastes like a pumpkin pie!

Afterthought: If you're ever in Destin, Florida, (near Fort Montgomery, not far from Pensacola) there's a place called McGuire's which smokes their own meats for DAYS, but also brews their own beers. Their 'Millenium' was one of the best ales I ever had.

Hard Cider

I know it's not beer but I have developed a taste for Woodchuck Hard Cider
They have five flavors so to speak. Amber, Dark and Dry, Granny Smith, Raspberry, and Pear.

There is great a Taproom here in Greenville called Barley's average about 50 types of beer, ales, and the like. Great place to hang out it's were I first discovered the Hard Cider.

I also enjoy Guiness every now and then.

Damn- I can't stop checking this thread out! lol Well I got to thinkin' while I was at work today and I've remembered another brew that I have a soft spot for. It's called Mad Anthony's and it's brewed and bottled in Erie, PA. It's got a bit body to it, I'd say similar to Sam Adams. Just enough flavor to make it enjoyable. Another one I haven't seen around for a while is Leinenkugal (sp?). They have a red that I don't care for but the original is quite tasty!

All this talk of beer and I've still got a shift to finish at the radio station... that's not fair! After all this is nothing like WKRP in Cincinatti!!! lol

Oh, so many beers, so little time....

For years, my favorite beer was Pilsner Urquell, which once was considered best beer in the world by Money magazine.

San Diego has some interesting brewerys -- my favorite there was Gordon Biersche's Blonde Bock. I like Bass ale, pale ale and sometimes a dark ale.

I like lagers, ales, dark beers, some lighter beers, and my favorite beer title is Dixie Blackened Voodoo Lager.

Funny but there's a Mad Anthony's that's brewed in Fort Wayne, IND.

They have a good brown ale, but it's touch and go if you get a good one.

MMmmm ... BBeeeeerrrr ...

Gotta jump in on this one! My favorite beer? I'd have to say Troegs Pale Ale ... it's made in Harrisburg and I go to the brewery there fairly often. It's not available very many places, though, unfortunately. This weekend we're going up there to get a growler fill of an Experimental Pilsner they have. Victory Hop Devil is great, too. Another Pennsylvania brew. Several years ago I took a brewing class and it really opened my eyes to the incredible varuety of beers available. I've seen many on this thread that I've had and liked ... have to admit I've become what one person described as a "hop head", though. I do enjoy a nice malty Celebrator Dopplebock or one of the many Scottish style ales available, but I think my preferences generally run toward the hoppier styles. My buddy and I made 20 gallons of brew in my garage this past weekend (a new record for us!) ... 10 gallons of Irish Red Ale and 10 gallons of a nice Marzen-style lager.

If you just go by the name ?¢‚Ç¨?ìArrogant ba***rd Ale?¢‚Ç¨?. For flavor?¢‚Ç¨¬¶ I would say one of the hoppier beers at the Blue Corn (a local microbrewery here in Albuquerque). I my choice would be limited to larger breweries, I like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or Guinness.

hahaha...yep, that's a good one, I used to drink that quite a long time ago. I guess it's doing well if they are branching out.

But you're right, it isn't beer, so I skipped it (my favorite drink is as bad a question as my favorite movie...

)

I thought Dixie Blackened Voodoo is actually pretty good! Dixie Jazz is easier to swallow, though.

ONLY IN THE WINTER

I like many styles,types and brands of brew...often lean toward the darker...porter and stouts.

But every year i look foward to a winter release...Youngs Winter Warmer
no spice or holiday flavor deep amber in color...just good clean refreshment.

Shamus -- no I never made it there (pizza port) and am now ensconced in Iowa for a spell. SD had some nice breweries.

I am not sure if there are any breweries in or around Des Moines.

Back when I could drink beer it was Budweiser for an amber, Corona occassionally, with XX or XXX, Modelo Negra, or Bohemia for darker stuff.

It's the lower carbonation that makes the difference. Try pouring regular bottled or canned beer with a bit of splashy into a pitcher and then into your glass. The drop in Carbonation allows the malt flaveor to come thru and the beer is easier to drink.

Revival

For many here in the good ol' USA, we are currently in the great beer and ale revival, where old styles, and regional specialties are being recreated faithfully, artisticly, and scientifically at your local brew pub. Just today as an ending for a jaunt to Upland to check out some antique store on second avenue, I stopped in at Old Mount Baldy Brewing. I had 3 very nice interpretations of India Pale Ale and a decent Brown ale, by getting a 4 selection taster set.

I tend to like Ales over Lagers but there are exceptions. I like British and Belgian beers alot and there American cousins.

I have had Theakston's Old Peculiar out of the "pull" tap and it maybe be the finest pint I have ever raised. Also Fullers ESB thru the pull tap is outstanding where was that hint of apricot hiding? Poleko Gold a pale ale at the brewey in Anderson Valley as well as their Barney Flats Oatmeal stout is exceptional. Victory ALe, Redhook ESB, Anchor's Old Forhorn. The Arrogant ba***rd and his cousins from San Diego way is top notch.

These days it is a plethora fine beers, choice, cool and refreshing. Be thankful too, during the dark days when the mediocre national fizz water brands were in control, you had to either have a good import or make it at home.

Great thread. Lately I've been drinking Pilsner Urquell and Bass more than anything else. I like a Corona with lime in the summer. If I can get it, a real German beer is always good...lately I've been indulging in Maisel Weissen at a local bistro that carries it. I like a Shiner Bock and Yuengling, too. A Guinness is wonderful if it is draft...I don't care for the bottled variety too much.
I'm getting thirsty just typing this for some reason.:cheers1:
