Can anyone give me some pics to the results of perms... Personal results... I'm at a bit of a loss as to what different kinds of perms there are (if there are any) and I've looked around here (even in the designated PERM thread) but I'm slow...

What different kinds of perms are there (All I knowis the super tight 80's poodle perm)

Can you get soft waves of uf a perm?

Does it wash or brush out?

Can you get like Rita hayworth waves with a perm?

If so is it easy.... That is Can a perm help you to maintain the same or at least a similar pulled together look you getjust after leaving the salon?

What kind of retro styles ar possible with a perm? Pics please?

A perm is a wonderful thing the main thing about it though is that the perm rod size you use will get you different results, the larger the rod the softer the wave you will get in your hair. A perm does not wash or brush out it has to grow out. It will become weaker over time but that perm will stay with you till you grow it out, because a perm restructures the disulfide bonds in your hair. You can get a Rita Hayworth style to your hair but you have to set your hair to achieve it, the perm only helps the curl hold up better and longer in most all cases. Getting the just out of the salon look is always going to take time to get and with a perm it will be easier but it still will take a good amount of effort simply because you have to use proper perm maintence to keep your hair looking good.

I am strongly considering a perm at the moment as I can only get a good curl by sleeping in rollers every night, which is really giving my scalp a hard time. If I do nothing my hair is straight with kinks and utterly style-less so some waves would be a godsend.

I was JUST thinking about this same thing before I saw this post. I set every night and while it doesn't take too much effort, I wondered if I should take the plunge (again...used to have a perm regularly in elementary school!) and have it done again.

I'm hoping that the technology of the perm has come a long way since then....they always used small rollers...

What is setting exactly? What does it do?

And setting lotion?

I've looked through the thread but all I see is people that already know about it talking to other people that already know about it...

What exactly is necessary to maintain a perm?

How often to I need to go in for another perm?

What rollers would I need for a Rita look?

(I have a place earby called Frenchy's Beauty parlor... Anyone know if they do perms?)

Anybody able to help me...

as I understand it, even with a perm, you still need to set your hair in curlers like you normally do, only when you have set it, it holds the curl for longer

I'm no expert here but I'll try. Sorry I can't help with the other questions as I've never had a perm.

What is setting? Curling your hair. Usually using pin curls or rollers. A wet set is hair that is curled damp and left in long enough to dry (usually over night). A dry set is done with dry hair.

Setting lotion? Setting lotion is a product that you put in your hair prior to curling it. It helps keep your hair curly a bit like mousse or gel would, only better, longer, and smoother. There's a whole thread on which kinds and how to use it here:

The most popular seems to be Lottabody. I buy mine from Sally's for a couple of dollars.

They only make you wish your hair would grow faster.

Really? people I know have had hairdressers tell them the chemicals increase hair growth, they have to get their hair cut more often because of it...[huh]

I'm a hairdresser and I never ever told anyone that story, this is really not true, you're hair may even break more easy so it will go shorter .

I had a perm but I hated it, and I have natural curls so I can do a set without using perm.

If you don't want to look 80's you have really to do a set after getting a perm.

Sounds like a great way to con people into getting your hair cut more often! I think it just seems like it grows faster as you're aware of the root growth if the perm is tight or the hair is really straight.

I had never heard of this procedure until you mentioned it. Now I'm dying to get one! I highly doubt anyone near me does this type of thing, but a gal can dream...

You really do have to set your hair to get Rita like results, even after a perm. I got a large rod perm in November, just for the heck of it really, just to try it out. I was able to come up with the look in the picture after lots of effort but without setting my hair. The results always looked weird and took way too long to style. There is more about it in the perms thread.

The perm has changed in the months that I've had it and I can't even coax it into making these soft curls, so I set my hair regularly again. One thing I can tell you is that my hair takes curl so well now. I can use foam rollers like hot rollers, 30 min on dry hair and I have well defined curls, semi-long lasting curls.
One thing I must stress with setting permed hair is set it wet or quite damp. I find that doing this keeps the perms "kinks" from forming a ruining a good set. A digital perm would work differently than this as I think it requires heat to make curl.
And just for a laugh, this is my hair after a hair cut. My stylist dried it with a blow dryer and these are the hilarious results. Mind that this picture was taken 3 months after the perm was done and I never, never blow dry my hair. My hair always looks worse when I leave a salon then when it does when I go in, even before the perm.
