Here's a confetti lucite one I found this weekend on sale at a local antiques market!

The antiques market had a ton of beautiful ones at fantastic prices, but none of them had that flip over metal cover inside AND a screen - they all just had either one of the other. I think loose powder compacts are pretty much useless otherwise. I know you can buy the screens, though - does anyone know where? I'd found a website a long time ago that has them but I can't seem to find it again now that I'm actually looking!

Is that why my loose powder leaked all over the inside of my purse? No screen....I assumed that metal cover was the screen.

Wow, I feel kinda stupid now. Beautiful compacts by the way.

No, the metal cover should be adequate to keep the powder in the compact. The screen just filters the powder so you don't get too much on your puff, and so the powder doesn't puff out when you open the cover.

Usually my compacts have either/or, not both, and that's worked fine.

I'd really prefer both. The problem with having just a screen is that you still end up with a bunch of powder on your puff while the compact is shifting around in your purse. With just the metal cover and no screen, your puff stays clean in transit, but then it's easy to end up with too much powder on it when you go to apply.

Freebie

My hair gal back in North Carolina presented me with this one day when I showed up for my appointment. I believe her exact words were, "I knew you liked old stuff, so I thought of you the minute I saw it!" lol Whatever, it's a nice little compact. I think I'll tuck breath mints inside it once I have it thoroughly cleaned! (Um, that gray square on the right is the mirror, which works I promise. I just caught the ceiling in the photo.)

Well that didn't seem to work the way I wanted it to, I expected to be able to see the photo, so much for following the directions. Can anyone tell me what went wrong?

I am so jealous! These are all so pretty...a compact is next on my list, but I've not been able to find anything good on Etsy. I bought one for my friend last year though, it was beautiful, with an enamel underwater scene of a mermaid on the cover.

I only have two.

The green one was listed as a 'depression era' compact. It is SUPER Tiny.

I do like the gauge where I can control the powder.

This one was labeled late 40s

Its my evening out compact.

I love this one. It feels very sweet and teenage (or "in-between"), but I know notiing about compacts!

Google is awesome! This etymology site says:

English in origin. The suffix -teen (as in thirteen, etc.) is simply the number ten in an unfamiliar guise. It gave rise, in the 17th century, to the noun teen, which was usually used in phrases like in the teens or in one's teens. Are you surprised that it appears so early? You may be surprised again to learn that teenager did not arise until the late 1930s or early 1940s, though teenage appeared first in 1921.

Sorry for the crappy quality, apparently my camera hates any kind of light that isn't daylight. I found this little treasure in a local antique store. I have not the slightest idea what time period its from. But it's quite darling although it's a bit tarnished- I think it adds to its "vintage" quality. I haven't put anything in it yet, as it doesn't have a screen. I love the delicate little flowers on the outside, and the way the mirror is made.

Does any one you gals carry mineral foundation in their compact for touch ups? How do you manage to do the "swirl your brush in small bowl with poweder" - thing? I guess a sponge would really be the best option here...
