Where do you hang your hat?

I got a hat/coat tree at Ikea. I think it was about $20 or $30. It only has four hooks, and really they're rather close together, but the hooks are different sizes/heights, so even though the brims of the hats overlap, they don't mash into each other, and sit pretty nicely because no two hats...

    Senator Jack's brush with greatness

I think my reaction would be similar to Jack's. I'd say something along the lines of "P...p...p...aul Muh Muh... Hi, I'm Adam."

    Tall Ship Sail - Clothing

A hat here is mainly a practical consideration. Make sure it has a strap, or you WILL lose it. Tilley makes some nice, tough, well-ventilated hats that will keep you cool, and have a strap. Above all, have fun!

    Eddie Bauer

They still have some nice stuff. I have a few not-very-dressy button downs that I got really cheap on sale. They seem to be pretty well-made. More the weekend at the cabin type shirts, though, not really work-appropriate. It's worth going there and looking around when they have a sale.

    Why leather soled dress shoes?

My dance shoes are leather dress shoes I picked up at Value World used for $8.50. They are branded "DOMANI made in Italy for Johnston & Murphy", very light, thin uppers that are almost like glove leather, and the soles, despite being leather, are very flexible. I can quite easily bend the shoe...

    No-Iron Shirts

I'm lazy. I wear a jacket, so I only have to iron the front, collar, and cuffs of my shirts.

    Who Does Without TV?

I actually got called by a survey company today. On my cell phone, but I figured I'd indulge them because I never use all my minutes anyway, despite being on a 400 minute/month plan. After confirming that I was indeed over 18, and a resident of Dearborn, don't work for a marketing or telecom...

Is the vintage crowd the curmudgeon crowd?

I would much rather go somewhere from 9-2 rather than 5-10 or whatever. By the time I get out of work, have a bite to eat, pick up around the house a bit, change, etc., it's getting pretty close to 9, and once I get to wherever the action is, I want to be able to spend some real time there. Five...

    Reviving Detroit

Beautiful house, and looks like a great neighborhood. I'm just south-west of there, in the north-east corner of Dearborn. Two miles from where those kids were shot last week :(

DETROIT CITY COUNCIL VOTES TO DEMOLISH M.C.S.!

Some pictures of Detroit. There's a picture in there from the Packard plant of the Packard plant; you can see the soot-covered cracks in the windows. The Packard plant burning isn't unusual. http://www.marchandmeffre.com/detroit/index.html

DETROIT CITY COUNCIL VOTES TO DEMOLISH M.C.S.!

Yeah, that happens every other week. The thing is something like 3 million square feet, so the FD just lets it burn itself out if they can't deal with the fire from a safe distance. Most of the re-bar has been chiseled out and sold for scrap by now, so they don't want to risk going inside to put...

    Michigan Anyone?

Any particular area of Michigan you have in mind? Late summer is going to be pretty warm, so I'd suggest something involving water, probably along the Lake Michigan coast towards the north, or even north of the thumb on Lake Huron. If you want out-of-the-way small towns, there's always the...

Death of the Little Black Book?

I have a little book. It's black. It has lots of random crap in it. Some phone numbers, but mostly old shopping lists, meeting minutes, to-do lists, directions to friends' houses, etc.

Solid tie and a pocket square

I'd go toward the shirt with blue, but an obviously different shade of blue. You can't match it exactly (nor should you), so don't make it look like you tried. Not navy, though, because it won't contrast enough with your suit. You want to go lighter, perhaps a robins-egg blue? It could work to...

Is a vest meant to hold you in?

It is a nice feeling. Like a constant, gentle hug. It does hold you in a little, but yeah, if you tighten up the belt and suck in to put it on, it's going too be pulling at the buttons. If you've just got a little bit of loose floppy stuff it will keep that up off your waistband, though. ;)

DETROIT CITY COUNCIL VOTES TO DEMOLISH M.C.S.!

I drive by MCS every day on my way to work. It's a beautiful building, but too far gone. Like most abandoned buildings in Detroit, it doesn't have a single intact window left; you can see right through the building's upper stories as you drive by. Of course, the City Council probably won't do...

    Barber Shops

Walked past a barber shop in Ann Arbor tonight... they had their halloween decorations up, which consisted of painting the windows with signs saying "Mrs. Lovett's Meat Pies".

    Halloween Costumes

I eBayed a slightly dinged up foil to wear as a sword. Should be getting in any day now. Wearing a coat that is somewhat martial looking in that it has a lapel button that will button the neck shut. I'll probably put together some kind of sash, find a neck ruffle thing, maybe an appropriately...
