short, thin, size 36... sounds like you're made for the vintage market! You could pick up a nice vintage peacoat quite easily at that size. I suppose they have big lapels... but popped up, they really help keep out the wind.
I have a few greatcoats, including a US Navy issue 46L bridge coat and a 44L pea coat (both current issue I think). I got the bridgecoat in a slightly larger size for some layering.
The peacoat is heavier wool than the bridgecoat, but I think the bridgecoat is a bit more elegant. Most of my...
fit is a personal thing, but I've always read that the sleeves on an overcoat should cover the cuffs of a suit & shirt worn beneath. If you let your arms loose by your sides the cuff should sit at about the base of your thumbs.
No, I've found a few proper biker jackets that use studs in stress points the same way as in denim jeans. These are sometimes referred to as "structural rivets".
I just thought that someone on here might know something about jacket design & function; there's lots of chat about stitching &...
Many thanks for the replies so far.
I'm not worried about a jacket wearing out; rather it's the actual related physical principles that I'm interested in: basically how jackets (or any leather work) are designed to counter shear-stresses. For the most part, jackets don't undergo much...
Hi,
The thread on the different horsehide textures on the front of the same jacket prompted me to post this. In that thread, irow is concerned that thinner leather on one side of the jacket may rip at the "stress point' at the corner of one of the pockets.
It is my understanding that...
Those crombie coats are strange. Too short-looking (either below the knee, or above for a short look; at the knee is just wrong). No option for long or short sizes either.
The buttons are very widely spaced (much more so than any historical UK military coat), but its a slim fit, so if you wore...
Artificial "fleece" is composed of plastic fibres; these are solid. Shearling is natural hair, which are hollow fibres.
Heat is retained by insulating the body with layers of air, which is a poor conductor of heat. Hence, as hollow fibres, wool has air pockets both between the hairs and within...
I have a sterlingwear ex-navy 44L peacoat, and I am very happy with it. I suppose I would say, unless you want a color other than black, why bother with the civilian version at RRP US$250+ when you can pick up surplus or 2nd hand for half that price... or considerably less than that: I got mine...
Following from the locked thread (and ignoring any politics): Bill Clinton was wearing a nice half-belt in Ohio yesterday.
I don't know much about leather jackets, so I might have got the ID wrong. Nice jacket anyway, if not a bit informal for the occasion.
This might be of interest. The BBC just did a photo news story on 100 year old colour photography from Russia. This was the 5th photo in the series. not sure if these would be peacoats per se.

Thanks for the measurements. I'm getting married soon, and I was looking to get some large coathangers on the wedding present list (exciting eh?).
I found these large 20" plastic hangers that are cheap (Canadian company, but seem to sell to US)...
