Any vintage alternatives to the trench coat?

short, thin, size 36... sounds like you're made for the vintage market! You could pick up a nice vintage peacoat quite easily at that size. I suppose they have big lapels... but popped up, they really help keep out the wind.

    Which would you choose?

I have a few greatcoats, including a US Navy issue 46L bridge coat and a 44L pea coat (both current issue I think). I got the bridgecoat in a slightly larger size for some layering. The peacoat is heavier wool than the bridgecoat, but I think the bridgecoat is a bit more elegant. Most of my...

    Does this trench coat fit?

fit is a personal thing, but I've always read that the sleeves on an overcoat should cover the cuffs of a suit & shirt worn beneath. If you let your arms loose by your sides the cuff should sit at about the base of your thumbs.

    Leather jacket design, question

No, I've found a few proper biker jackets that use studs in stress points the same way as in denim jeans. These are sometimes referred to as "structural rivets". I just thought that someone on here might know something about jacket design & function; there's lots of chat about stitching &...

    Leather jacket design, question

Many thanks for the replies so far. I'm not worried about a jacket wearing out; rather it's the actual related physical principles that I'm interested in: basically how jackets (or any leather work) are designed to counter shear-stresses. For the most part, jackets don't undergo much...

    Leather jacket design, question

Hi, The thread on the different horsehide textures on the front of the same jacket prompted me to post this. In that thread, irow is concerned that thinner leather on one side of the jacket may rip at the "stress point' at the corner of one of the pockets. It is my understanding that...

Opinions on Vanson Luftwaffes Officers Great Coat?

Nice coat sloan. good length and a great fit. I really like it.

Opinions on Vanson Luftwaffes Officers Great Coat?

Those crombie coats are strange. Too short-looking (either below the knee, or above for a short look; at the knee is just wrong). No option for long or short sizes either. The buttons are very widely spaced (much more so than any historical UK military coat), but its a slim fit, so if you wore...

    Wide hangers (available in Canada?)

I get plastic 19-20" oversize hangers from either target or (I think) K-Mart. Put some pipe insulation foam over them and voila.

Is Shearling That Much Warmer Than The Equivalent Thickness Fleece?

Artificial "fleece" is composed of plastic fibres; these are solid. Shearling is natural hair, which are hollow fibres. Heat is retained by insulating the body with layers of air, which is a poor conductor of heat. Hence, as hollow fibres, wool has air pockets both between the hairs and within...

What do you guys think about the Sterlingwear Navigator Pea Coat?

I have a sterlingwear ex-navy 44L peacoat, and I am very happy with it. I suppose I would say, unless you want a color other than black, why bother with the civilian version at RRP US$250+ when you can pick up surplus or 2nd hand for half that price... or considerably less than that: I got mine...

    Bill in a half-belt

Following from the locked thread (and ignoring any politics): Bill Clinton was wearing a nice half-belt in Ohio yesterday. I don't know much about leather jackets, so I might have got the ID wrong. Nice jacket anyway, if not a bit informal for the occasion.

    Peacoats from the world...

This might be of interest. The BBC just did a photo news story on 100 year old colour photography from Russia. This was the 5th photo in the series. not sure if these would be peacoats per se. Caption: The high-quality pictures open an unexpectedly vivid window on a long-vanished world. Here...

Trench Coat - the 'Ultimate' Thread!

That Norwegian greatcoat is very similar to the Danish greatcoats that are significantly cheaper on ebay. I think uncle sams is quite expensive.

Trench Coat - the 'Ultimate' Thread!

This does seem a bit short, at the knee is the shortest I would wear a trench or overcoat. Shoulders aren't raglan, although I prefer them like this.

    Was it a "Polo Coat"

Gabardine is most typically wool, at least historically.

Special Hangers for Heavy/Expensive Leather Jackets?

Thanks for the measurements. I'm getting married soon, and I was looking to get some large coathangers on the wedding present list (exciting eh?). I found these large 20" plastic hangers that are cheap (Canadian company, but seem to sell to US)...

Special Hangers for Heavy/Expensive Leather Jackets?

What width are these hangers? The amazon page lists their packing size as 15" which is rather less than the 19-20" I would like.
