I think Winchester felts is owned by Stratford hats out of Chicago, the guys that do the uniform hats. I may not be spelling them correctly but they do make fine hats and I would guess that they get there pick of the felts.
I get e-mails from Stetson on occasion advertising there new hats. It has gotten to be very difficult to find out what the felt actually is, I rarely see them identified as fur felt and practically never as beaver. My biggest give away as to quality is in the sizing, if it's S,M,LG, etc. as...
The simple answer is to get another cattleman and have a hat shop cut the brim down. Actually, you can probably do it yourself, I have. You can get a tool just for that, but you really don't need it. There ya go, problem solved!
There is nothing wrong with pride in ownership and quality is seldom cheap. I suppose I'm just not as demanding with straw as felt. My favorite straw is an Akubra and it doesn't say what it is, it looks like hemp. I think I paid a little over a hundred for it. I have a few Panama's and they were...
No wanting to do Milan may be as simple as not being able to compete with companies producing nice Milans in the one-hundred-dollar range. Straw in general, with a Panama being the exception, are plentiful and for the most part good quality. Actually, there are some nice Panama's out there for a...
IMO, a hat, any hat, is either a fine-looking hat or it isn't. It has nothing to do with how you look. Granted a 3-inch brim does look smaller on a big head than a smaller head but it's still the hat. I don't care for stingy brims and around 3 1/2 is as big as I go but that is because I think...
I heard once, the difference in a real cowboy and someone that just has the boots is that a real cowboy, the B.S. is on the outside of his boots. In keeping with the idea that we can all do whatever and whenever we want, I haven't seen very many of you showing your straws. It is that time of...
My strats look like strats, my open roads look like open roads. Strats don't make very good open roads and open roads don't make very good strats. And the picture to your left is not an open road or a stat!
I will confess, I like the modern Stetsons. If given the choice between a modern Stetson and a vintage Stetson in the same condition for approximately the same money I would of course go for the vintage Stetson. That really has nothing to do with my question. Since Dobbs is now owned by the same...
JFK is usually credited with men not wearing hats nearly as much as they did before him. Those pictures of him were definitely in a trilby or stingy brim as we call them. That is the period when they were popular, and it might explain why he didn't care for hats. Most Akubras have a wider brim...

Not particularly, it may not actually be straw. It's a manufactured material. There are different types of weaves and straw, research it. Even just a Panama can get complicated, they are rated by strands per inch and are priced from 50 bucks to several thousand dollars. Actually, I'm not sure...
