    Repairing Fur?

Does anyone know of a place in the Northwest (Oregon/Washington) that repairs fur? I have a 30's-era mink wrap that I inherited, and there are some tears in the pelt. Other than that, it is in good shape; the lining is intact and I would like to be able to wear it from time to time...

    mug shots!

Old Mug Shots I found this article online today, and thought it was interesting. The pictures speak for themselves, and give great references of clothing and hairstyles through the years. http://www.newsweek.com/id/209842?GT1=43002

I love that rocket fabric! Trying to figure out a reason why I just need to have some, but I'll behave. The shelves are literally overflowing as it is. but I sure could use a few more skirts.... ;) the 1921 ensemble was a lot of fun and a lot of frustration; I'm really pleased that it...

oh, I just adore that dress! stripes can be so very much fun. I assume the bodice detailing was accomplished with darts? This is my latest, it's based on a 1921 catalogue- the skirt from one page and the blouse from another. The original showed the blouse as one piece with a mock front...

I made this for a garden party fundraiser. Wishing I had gotten this picture with a better background, but at least I got a shot of the whole outfit. The fabric isn't 20's era, but the theme was the art of Edward Gorey who drew the 20's during the 60's so we had a bit of fun with it.

    Clotheslines

my clothesline goes from the shed to the corner of the house along the north end of the back yard. At one end is an eyebolt and the other is a tension screw used in wire railings. I also have a cargo tie-down to cinch out the slack.

    Show Us Your Purchases!

Oak Harbor is beautiful; I lived there for a summer back in the early 90's and have always wanted to go back. The bin of umbrellas was full to overflowing today; it seems to be the season for them.

I got this umbrella today at a new vintage/rummage shop downtown; I love the multiple spines and the pagoda top. It will be perfect for the Edward Gorey Garden Party in a few weeks.

Can you help me date this item??

oh, that is very helpful! does the dash in the number matter? the number is 201430-22. I searched for that patent and found two references, one is for dating an armband based in the snap. The poster on the Great War Forum stated this was a 1922 patent, making the armband in question a WWII...

    Secret Passageways

oooh, that's wonderful! My sister lived in an old house in Bremerton, WA back in the late 70's that had a secret room. The entrance was a large bookcase at the far end of the main sitting room, and it opened into a small sitting area. Whether it was built for smuggling or due to the...

Can you help me date this item??

no hardware to speak of since they are soft clutches. they do close with snaps marked Newey followed by the patent number. the insides are silk satin, and have pockets that appear to be the size of an ID or credit card; that would follow with 1960's I think. I would love to carry the white...

Can you help me date this item??

I had almost forgotten about these bags, but was walking past the shop where I found them today. They are both velvet with steel beadwork (you can see some rust on the white bag). The black bag has beadwork on front and back, the white is only beaded on the front. Only the white bag had a...

I love the Erte-inspired dress! That is actually similar to my next 'small project'. I do tend to mire down in things that seem to be good ideas to start. Speaking of such, I finished my sewing with a plan a few weeks ago and haven't taken much time to post pictures. details are on my...

Hat and Glove Era Advise & Etiquette

I have been looking for a size chart that helps for gloves; my hands are slender by modern standards but many vintage gloves are snug. The real problem I have is finger length; most gloves I try are much too short in the fingers. Is there a size chart that measures both width of palm and...

I'm tired of the "bad economy".

in the vein of getting a bit of perspective on what 'down and out' actual means, I do get frustrated by those who bemoan their current states while enjoying luxuries. One specific instance is an aquaintance who is unemployed yet still makes money as a freelance, and enjoys her cable...

I'm tired of the "bad economy".

There has been a lot of press locally about people starting gardens on small patches of land and even rooftops. We put in beans, squash, and tomatoes in the back yard, using what used to be a decorative raised bed. Another piece that is missing is family; so few people have a network to...

    Fictional Character Crush

I'll see your Star Wars crush and raise you a Farscape: Captain John Crichton. Dreamy, introspective, and intelligent. For the classics, I've had a thing for Atticus Finch since I was 14.

Horrible movies, and the people who get duped into waching them....

thank you. That film causes me no end of aggravation. The heroine is one of the least sympathetic characters in cinema, incredibly egocentric and whiny to boot. The costumes didn't help either; my historic sense was tingling through the whole 10 hour ordeal.
