    Vintage car observation.

Some years ago I owned a 1931 Alvis Speed 20 Tourer. As I recall this was classified in the UK as post vintage. Only cars manufactured pre December 1930 are classified as vintage. That damned Alvis caused me all sorts of grief. My next car was a 1941-42 MG TC. my next a Lotus 11, a VERY low...

    Handkerchiefs and Pocket Squares

I think these eleborate folds in pocket hankies look far too contrived. True elegance looks effortless. A quality silk handkerchief tumbling out of a breast pocket looks far more elegant. I can remember years ago that pocket handkerchiefs were sold on strips of cardboard with just a three point...

    Fountain Pens, Pocket Watches, Pipes

Most decent old fountain pens have gold nibs which wear in such a way as to suit a particular handwriting so it would have quite normal not to lend it. I have a Mont Blanc that I don't allow anyone else to write with but I prefer a keyboard for serious writing.

    Anyone for Pink Gin?

Pink gin or "pinkers" was commonly drunk by British naval officers. The most usual way of making it is to shake a few drops of Angostura bitters into a glass, throw away the bitters leaving just a residue in the glass, top this up with a generous measure of gin and water and ice to taste. I'm...

An open letter from the mayor of London...

Forgive me Slicksuit, but in these trying times my normally dormant athiestic fervour is at a higher than usual pitch. I have enjoyed T.S. Eliot's work but I'm rather disinterested in his or anyone else's religious views. We've already had fire bombs thrown into mosques and the followers of...

An open letter from the mayor of London...

I take your point. The Tooth Fairy has played a bigger role in my own life than your God. However, my point was more to do with carnage wreaked by people using one or other variety of God to alibi their madness.

An open letter from the mayor of London...

As a Londoner I don't feel in any way heroic. The reality is that we have no alternative but to get on with our lives as best we can. The echoes of these explosions will ring loudly in the ears of the extremists and the stupids of all persuasions in our community and will cause more pain and...
