The interesting thing about this thread is that some of the hats we love in these parts were equally outlandish when first debuted.... the first man to wear a top hat in England was arrested for inciting a riot.... simply by wearing the hat in public.

Wonder what happened to the first guy to wear a Fez?? Wonder if his name was Fez?
On second thought it would have had to be Dr. Who.

"The Fez is the ancient and modern national headdress of the Moabites / Moors. The Fez is a brimless headdress — most commonly produced in scarlet red with an ebony / black tassel. ... The Fez is worn as a symbol of the womb. The top of it has a nipple shape that symbolizes the navel."

    OK.

I'd be interested in hearing the rest of that story. I'm certain the PD was taken to the cleaners over that one. I'd be curious to hear what the constable/judge had to say to the Gomers who brought in a guy over a hat. I'd put good money that it wasn't the hat wearer who incited that riot.

"...several women fainted at the unusual sight, while children screamed and a dog yelped..."

    You'd think he was Quasimodo.

There wasn't anything along the lines of the modern police force in England in 1797 - just a locally organised watchmen and constables arrangement. The first professional police force in Britain was the City of Glasgow police force, established by statute in 1800; Peel's men in London came some years later. Back in 1797 (and for quite some time to come thereafter) the justice system was a lot more brutal than it later became; what we would now consider a miscarriage of justice would have been almost par for the course in 1797.

You also must remember that newspapers were entertainment, then, too. The story may have been embellished a tad.

The first er, 'hat' looks like she's a crustacean. The second defies description. The last one looks like a McDonald's special.

    Hello!
Ocasionally I step in and read some threads as my gaming is slowing down again.
Not much to do on Red Dead Redemption II and other videogames I play currently.
I would prefer that hat to have a bigger crown :)
I have one with the same look (wide brim, very low crown)
