Nice suit! I'm really not big no the cowboy look and wasn't expecting to see something that was my bag when I clicked on this thread, but I'd certainly wear that.

A nearly identical western suit, made for Gene Autry by the same tailor, was on eBay last week. Its opening price of $600 didn't fetch one bid.

True, but then those high opening prices tend to scare of lot of potential buyers away. If an auction starts out with a rather low opening bid the whole thing can get pretty heated and evolve into a bidding war. But I don't really need to tell you that... ;)

In the realm of collecting the clothing of country and western stars, Gene Autry owned suits are relatively common. Those linked auctions are respectively the third and fourth ones I've seen in the last 2 years sold by none specialists.

That rings true, Guttersniper. Years ago, I saw in a Melrose vintage clothing store a 1940s DB gab suit custom made for Gene Autry. The price was $250. What made it "special" was the tailor: NUDIE'S. Much more famous and collectible than TARTAGLIA ... although 'Tartaglia Bros.' was Beverly Hills' longest-running (and arguably its best) tailoring business.

If I'd had the cash back then, I'd have bought that Nudie's suit.

The thing with Autry was that he was a MAJOR clothes horse, he lived a long time, and he never went broke, so his non-stage wear is around. His stage wear on the other hand . . .

I feel your pain on the Autry owned Nudie you passed up. About a year ago I passed on buying a Nudie set owned by Webb Pierce who, aside from being one of my favorites, was also my exact size! I had the cash in my savings account at the time, and the seller was asking a fair price, but I just couldn't pull the trigger . . .

. . .turns out Webb wore that suit on TV a bunch of times, was photographed in it for publicity stills, and it shoed up on an album cover!
