A pair of modern movies with a whole lot of style

Wong Kar Wai's Mood for Love and 2046 are astonishingly beautiful movies. They're a pair (so far). The first is a humble love story (so humble there's no sex, not even a kiss...imagine that!) set in the early 1960s in Hong Kong. Mr. Wong is highly attentive to period details. The lead actress and the outfits she wears are totally gorgeous. It's really cool to see the authentic attire set against authentic sets. Each consecutive set of frames leaves you breathless.

2046 is a sequel of sorts. The ways that Wong weaves a whole new (sci-fi) story in with the ongoing and aging affairs of the main characters from the first movie are just as breathtaking as the art direction and cinematography in both movies (all Wong's movies, but these in particular).

As they're both in Asian languages (the first in Cantonese, the latter in Cantonese, Mandarin, and Japanese) with subtitles, they might not be everyone's cup of tea (please don't pardon the pun). Being a speaker of Mandarin, I was, of course, purely fascinated. But I know from talking to and hearing from others that it doesn't take any knowledge of Chinese or China or Hong Kong to love these movies. You might consider giving them a try :eusa_clap

Second that

One of the best movies with sequel ever in my book.

I saw both in theater release and on video/dvd great either way but

stunning on the big screen.

Both could be broken down in selected still images to create a masterpiece

book of photographs.

I've only seen In the Mood for Love, but, yes it is stunning. A good friend of mine watches it about once a week.

If you've viewed the DVD be sure to watch the deleted scenes. Some of those deleted scenes are so amazing I wonder at Wong Kar Wai's editing choices. The Durian scene especially I found beautiful.

Good soundtrack, too.
