Advice needed on hat for my wedding.

Good morning gentlemen,

I was hoping to enlist your help on possible hat choices for me to wear at my wedding. The wedding will be in Silverton Colorado (an old western mining town near us) at 11k ft elevation and the sun can be rather oppressive for the folliclely challenges such as myself. We have found a nice felt wide brim hat in white and dried flowers to match her bouquet for the brim. The problem I have been having is finding a suitable style that works well for me. I am wearing a dark forest green 3piece tweed suit from Walker Slater, Alden Shell cordovan dress boots, a fitted ****e shirt with French cuffs, my grandfathers cufflinks, and my great grandfathers railroad gold pocket watch and chain. I have attached a picture of me in the suit before it was tailored to bring up the sleeves, a picture of the boots, and a few pictures of the location. I’m hoping to match the historic feeling of this place without appearing super dated. (A weird juxtaposition I know)

Hats I have in my consideration so far.
Stetson open road or stratoliner.
Panama Hat with a medium to wide brim.
Some sort of tweed flat cap.

Thank you for the assistance!

P.S. suggestions for ties would also be appreciated.

Assuming this is an outdoor event? Far be it for me to claim any fashion sense, but Id be leaning toward not clashing with the brides white hat. A dark green tweed suit kinda limits things, but Id be thinking a silverbelly, light grey, or white Open Road. DO post pictures of the event regardless what you decide on!

This is an outdoor event for the ceremony and we will have some photos taken with the old narrow gauge train. I think your right about complementing what my bride will be wearing and thing the silverbelly would probably do that effectively. What are your thoughts on the Stetson Yukon? I found a silverbelly in my size I could pick up reasonably. Also any particular reason to go with the open road over a stratoliner? I was originally leaning towards a stratoliner as the crown would match the style of my brides hat. (I have it linked below) She is planning on wearing her wolverine 1000 mile Sage green suade boots. And the bridesmaids are wearing Sage green dresses.

If thats her hat, Id agree that a Stratoliner would complement it well more so than an Open Road( I have several Stratoliners in different colors and love them all).

If hers is a flat brim, you could even steam a Strat brim a bit flatter to match with a little less swoop. ( dont wand the groom to look too rakish lol) I even seem to remember a Modern Stratoliner in an Ivory offering although it may be a wool rather than fur hat..... For a once in a lifetime event ( hopefully lol) I wouldnt be against a matching wool hat.... youll probably end up putting both hats on the wall with a wedding portrait as a "Big Day Display" artwork anyway!

Just as a thought... there ARE flat brim Open Road-ish Options out there... some without the Cattlemans Crease. Just for Comparison, Heres a flat Brim Open Road with Cattlemans Crease, A James Dean Foundation Stetson with a Fedora Bash, and a Stetson 20 with a more Fedorish bash

Those are awesome! I’ll start scouring the internet to see if I can find something similar in my size!

Let me know if you see anything similar in 7 3/8
Stetson Tri City and Midtown are two modern flat brim hats that should be fairly easy to find. The Tri City should also be available in a Dark Sage Green that might match the Suit. McKinney Hat should have them. Also American Hat Makers have a similar model called the Rancher

If the sun is going to oppressive is wearing a tweed suit that wise or a tweed cap? If the sun is out and as hot as you suggest then a panama makes the most sense but then stylistically you are wearing apples and oranges. The tweed and the straw just do not work as an ensemble. Start with the panama, a wider brimmed, Plantation style, wide curled brim with ribbon to complement the clothing. Then have a good linen suit made in appropriate style for the era. You'll look sharp and you won't faint from the heat of the tweed.

The problem is that the temps will likely be a high of 60-68 due to the elevation and time of year. Our dinner following should see cold temps. It snowed on me last week just above town. I regularly sunburn up here in the winter skiing and don’t want to replicate this with my head.

Then a good fur felt hat is in order. Give some consideration that if the tweed suit is mid to dark colour a Silverbelly hat will stand out and dominate the outfit> Is that the look you want? Is it the hat you want folks to notice? I suggest you choose a colour darker or at least even in colour/shade to your suit. Have it be a complement not the focal point of the outfit. I would lean towards a Homburg/Lords hat, more period correct, in a mid to dark brown. Or pick up an undertone from the tweed and match that in the hat colour. Or if you don't like these suggestions.......There is an AI app that will advise you on clothing/ensembles. My friend uses it all the time to choose his wardrobe. ChatGPT is now his butler.

I agree with Robert. To offer another opinion, if you are going formal, then why not go all the way! Here is a Cambridge bowler. A nice, dark homburg would be great, too.

Thank You! I never considered this style. It’ll try and pick one up and have my Fiancée choose which she prefers between the vintage 20x Stetson with a fedora bash I found and this.

My thoughts are to find a hat that compliments both you and your ensemble, not one that matches hers but rather doesn't conflict with it. If you don't pick a hat because it suits you and you feel comfortable and confident in it, it will show and look like a costume piece. I can only speak to how I dress and being a fan of tweed I'd never wear a Panama with it and a flat cap for a wedding? Not unless you guys are driving away in a 1931 Cadillac V-12 convertible. And tweed ain't formal. If you have the time you might look through this thread What Hat Are You Wearing Today ? | The Fedora Lounge and you will see just about every sort of hat worn with everything from t shirts to wedding suits.

Personally, I'd stay away from a snap brim look unless it 's just what you want. You may find a snap brim dress hat that's the perfect one for you. I like the OR style and have plenty of them to support this, even a sage green one but I'm not sure one of them would be my first choice. I think a western style thin ribbon with dimensions in the 3 x 6 range would look good but that style is a favorite of mine and I might be prejudiced. You might also look through this thread The Non Shorpy Web All Stars. | The Fedora Lounge. Here you will find vintage pics of people wearing hats from 'back in the day' with various hats and types of dress.

Thanks for the advice, do you have a few examples of a western style thin ribbon 3 x 6?
Thank You,

That’s an excellent collection and I do really like the proportions! I have this Stetson 20x on order already but am trying to find something similar to the above now too in maybe a brown, tan, or green. 7 3/8
