Nice one! It's a unique hat, not really my usual style but I really like the design; it's very original, and that colour is also very nice.

Out of curiosity, what's the brim size? It sure looks bigger than 3" to me, maybe 3 ¼"?

Regarding the shape, I have gently pulled all of my Akubras into a long oval shape. I guess you could wait for it to happen naturally with wear, heat, and moisture, but I just put the hat on my knee after wearing for a little while and gently pull it into the shape I want, accelerating the process.

Brim size seems to be 3 inch. from two I inquired about but I just bought this one without measurements as it just looked new & was really a good deal.

I can't find any details on the style. I imagine it was from the 80's & 90's. I figured for $40 it's worth a knock around or stretch. Doesn't really look like it was worn much from the inside.

Could be here by Thursday so will report back.

The one in the photo was a 54 & brim was 3 inch. The crown was bashed down on that one. Hoping it's not too short of a crown. Looks to be in the Snowy River range so a standard Akubra. I imagine the front could be pinched more teardrop.

Ordered a Akubra Range Sz 55 in hemp. Supposed to be like the Balmoral but with a 3 1/4 inch brim.
Been looking for a nice straw & price was right!

What does the Akubra Australian Assembly mean? This is a newer hat but it's discontinued.

Love the Classic Panama Look!

I have one, and love it. I don’t have a Balmoral (I’ve been considering one) but while they have the same shape, there are a couple of differences other than the brim size. The Balmoral comes with a thin leather band, the Range with a pug (purchased new, they came with two pugs, one black one and one luck-of-the-draw one). The Balmoral olso appears not to have the strip of more open weave on the side of the crown, just above the pug.

I like the open weave design. Gives it more character & I like the wider brim. 3 1/4 really is my min if you want to use it for sun not fashion.

It is hemp of some sort of natural fiber? I have been put off by the Shantung/ Bokara & the others manmade straw which is essentially paper. I really don't want a shellacked or poly'd paper hat.

It looks unworn & got a good deal under $50 shipped. I have seen the hat still stock only in SZ 55 at discount $105. Looks like it retailed for $160. Says Discontinued. This is a private seller & they describe it as new condition.

Akubra's legendary quality is available in a hemp straw hat. Hemp is one of the world's strongest fibers. The fibers are naturally resistant to mold and ultraviolet light and are extremely resistant to abrasion. Hemp straw hats are stronger than toquilla fiber Panamas, are more durable and will last longer. The partially vented crown of the Range is a pinched telescope and measures 4 inches at the front and 4½ inches at the sides. The brim is 3¼ inches wide. The 7-pleat cloth puggaree is 1⅝ inches wide. Reeded roan leather sweatband. Vented around the crown. Color is Natural. Made in Australia. Discontinued.
Thanks

Yeah, the hemp is a natural fibre, but there‘s plenty of stiffener in it.

Tomorrow tomorrow, it's only a day away!

Hoping 55 is ok & not small. I bought a 55 Akubra Snowy & it was big. I should have padded it but I decided to return it.
Now I have two 55 Akubra's in the mail but I think they are sort of round.

56 will come down near the eyebrows but maybe some might like to wear it higher... Oh well...Stay tuned.

Black Leisure looks great on the lady! My Shark is on the Fed Ex truck being molested in it's box & should be here today.
Pins & Needles.... Hope it fits. Details to come.

I like the way it fits Etsuko. My Shark swam in around 2 hours ago. Been giving it some steam & adjustment,
I think could be bigger. It fits but I like to pull it down more. OH well, going to have to look into 56.

Well, the Great Gray Shark got a brushing & some steam. Looks almost new actually looks new but I''d like it to fit lower/deeper in the back. Maybe it's more of a on the top of the head pulled back styles?

Happy with it though. Will be a great rain & going to the Dentist hat! :D:cool:

Measurements Brim is a full large 3 inch & crown 4 inch.
Crown is soft & pliable. Sort of pined the front a bit & gave it a slight teardrop. It's just too soft & comes back. Soft is good.

As suggested, I decided to move my akubra questions over here for better feedback.

In a couple of months I’m going to order a couple of akubra, one as a work hat, most likely a tablelands or a cattleman.

But as a general wear hat, I’m a little undecided. I like the look of the campdraft but not the limited available colours, I prefer either brown or heritage fawn as good neutral colors.

The squatter has some htings to recommend it, I want an open crown hat really, but am a bit concerned that the crown will be to short.

The Federation 4 looks great, I grew up in the 80’s so obviously it resonates but I don’t really want to come off like I’m in fancy dress.

I’d be interested to hear from those who have these hats and can offer comparisons and comments?

Cheers

I would contact the Hattery and ask them what the crown height is. I suspect the Akubra website is wrong. If the Hattery website is right, then 145mm crown is plenty big.

I would go for the Squatter if my head size were bigger. It has always attracted me. The bound brim really sets it apart and the dimensionality of it is very practical to an outdoors person who also might spend a lot of time in an office.

But you gotta like that look. Some folks don't like that swooping effect of a dimensional brim.

The Campdraft is a fantastic hat. It is very easy to wear and can go from outdoorsy all the way up to semi-formal. The Sand color is plenty neutral but my Heritage Fawn Fed IV is a very pretty color. And since the CD is a thin ribbon, the bigger brim doesn't look as oversized on my small head.

Personally, I'd go for the Squatter if it is indeed 145mm crown height. Second would be Heritage Fawn Fed IV and third would be Sand or Bluegrass Green Campdraft. Unless you are afraid of the Indiana Jones look, then I would not get the Fed IV and just do either the Squatter or the Campdraft.

Some shots of my heritage fawn Fed IV last year in SE Asia. These are great hats for all kinds of adventures.

Afraid of it is one at to put it, while I appreciate the look it’s not one I feel like I can pull off, so it’s probably a bit much for now at least.

Like you I I’ve a fairly small face, so an overly tall crown or wide brim swamps me a bit, but one option would be to put a teardrop crease in the federation IV and lower the top a bit so it doesn’t tower above my head quite so much. For reference even my regular Borsalino is taller than I’m used to. I actually like the brim in the fed, snap brim is negotiable.

I know most of you aren't thinking about straws this time of year, but it's summah down undah and I've been getting updates from Akubra about their new line of Mexican Palm straws. Forgive me if this has been covered here already, if so I missed it entirely.

I think they've done a great job at designing a few summer straw hats that are in keeping with the the Akubra brand and their country style hats, and that will appeal to a younger crowd as well. They seem like a a great option that differs from the more casual Sunbody type straws, modern Shantung Western ones, and Panamas, while being suitable for dressing up and down, and that look equally at home in town or country or at the beach, and that look equally good on men and women. My only question is how they will react to getting wet, in case of an occasional downpour or sun shower, I wouldn't expect them to be soak-able like the Sunbody Guatemalan palms.

My favourite is the Eyre in Extra Dark Toast, I think it's perfectly proportioned and a very handsome and practical design. The prices are way above what I like to pay for a straw and for that reason I'll probably pass on getting one, but I'm curious as to what the rest of you think of them.

Does anyone have decent photos of a federation IV with teardrop?

I can’t get a campdraft in a colour I like, and looking on the hattery website the fed is actually a little smaller brim wise than the squatter, and the height difference is only 0.5mm open crown, so I’m thinking it might be a great alternative.

Cheers

Here you go. This is the same Fed IV I showed you the other day. All those other photos are the same bash.

Thanks. I’m leaning towards one of these as they are a bit hat than the squatter but still have a lot of the things I like about it.

Checking out the dimensions using PowerPoint the brim profile is noticeably smaller whilst still offering decent face and neck coverage from the sun.
