It's not proven, but I think, Serpico was the role model for Horst Schimanski and his M65.
I think the nylon field jacket was a wardrobe cliche for TV cops and ex military guys, especially in the 1980's.

This first Schimanski jacket was Götz George's private M65.
The jacket was originally khaki, but the production team disagreed with the "paramilitary" look, so Götz had the idea to cut off the epaulettes and let the requisite decolor the jacket. And so they did. And Schimanski's tramp-jacket was born.

Funny point:
Schimanski's later M65 were special shortened ones, because it shouldn't cover too much of Götz George's ****, just to let him appear sportier.
But I have no clue, if the decolored M65 from the beginning still exists.

Does anyone know what that button the front fly just below the collar is used for? It doesn't seal the fly since poppers do that, and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the foldaway hood, at least as far as I can tell.
