Don't forget lack of scale and angle(lens focal length and position) in photos as well as ribbon height. Which is taller or squarer? Lets put the two examples together(they are both size 5-1/2/58/7-1/4):

Some of the 1930's hats were tall with no taper. One that is cloe to that 30's style are the ones Matt Deckard has produced.
In a way we should remember that during various eras there were a large number of styles produced, what may influence us is what do we see as prevelant during that specific era in film.

If you can do a search for "reverse taper" too.

Hat's that are available with open crowns that ae tall crowns will tend to allow more styls of bash and not taper as much. I have had several hats come as open crown and they are Akubra Squatter, Akubra Bushman, Akubra Campdaft and the Deckard MD-1.

the Squatter has a great late forties widebrim look.

The VS hat in my avatar was modeled on Bogart's "Maltese Falcon" hat. The block is straight but the crease (a diamond) gives it a slight taper. The Stendahl (also in the Art Fawcett thread) is based on a 1920s hat and it has a definite taper that is made by the cattleman style crease. The hat itself has little or no taper.

I rarely (could be never) see that type of blocking (straighter edge) in 1920/30s German and Austrian city style soft felt hats.
