The original Barbiso closed in the early 1980's . Cervo bought the license from them and has been making the hats using the Barbisio label since. There have been other licensees as well. Bollman made them here in the 1990's and a company in Columbia called Puerto fino makes them still for the religious market in the USA..

A friend who was in Italy on assignment and kindly went all the way to the factory at Biella and bought me a hat from the outlet/seconds store. It was basically rubbish that I gave to Vinnies.

If that is what they were selling to the public I wonder about the quality of the modern Cervo hats.

I haven't held a modern Cervo or Barbisio soft felt. I know that a person that use to post here had a fairly high opinion of them. This would be their higher end models.

Feels like a really nice hat a very stiff felt, I was thinking it was 50's just based on the style of the liner but yer 0 knowledge on this anyone know anything?

It's a very nice one! Sorry about the sweatband I think your guess on the date range is correct (maybe early 60s). Barbisio sold hats into the German market.

I found some pics in the archive when I was looking for pics of my french hats. This very long hair light grey Barbisio I gave to Paddy some time ago. If I remember aright it had an overwelt brim edge.

Barbisio Classic

I just recently picked up this Barbisio which is in really in fantastic shape. It has a 1 1/2" brim with thin overwelt edge and a 5 3/8" soft open crown. I think it was meant for the European market as it is a size 5/57 (7 1/8). I'm not sure how to describe the finish except its in between a smooth finish and a long hair. The hat is stamped "Classic" on the sweatband. I thought I would try it but I don't look good in a stingy brim hat. It's currently for sale in the classifieds if anyone is interested.

What can you tell me about this Barbisio?

i brought this hat a little over a year ago from a vintage clothing store in Manhattan, and I'm trying to find out the following:

1. What is the official name of the particular style of hat, British Shape, Shovel Back (I know that it's not called a Robin hood) etc...?

2. Approximately what year was it made?

3. I was told that it is one of the better Barbisio's, is it?

All I know is that it is made from mole (Talpa), and that it's was sold in a store call leightons which was an upscale mens clothing store (see photo) that was located in Manhattan NY where people like Walt Clyde Frazier use to shop back in the late 1960's and 70's. Thanks for your help

Most likely not made from mole fur. I believe the use of the word is finish / color related. My guess would be mid 1960s into the early 70s. It definitely has some Alpini influence.

I guess it is an Alpine hat. It's a typical Alpini Style: That Italian Military use this style!

Yes I have a similar one. It's kind of Alpini meets City. By the way I have heard this mentioned as Robinhood style which I do not believe is accurate for Barbisio. There is a historical connection with the Alpini hat and Barbisio (Super Bantam).

It looks like a Robin Hood style to me. This is a classic 1960's style hat.
