One size too small for me (and it shows) so it will move on soon. I feel that this is not that old, but really have no idea. Barbisio Classic in the Soana color.

That is a beauty, Bob. Pity it doesn't fit you. Hard to say exactly, but these "classic" Barbisio hats may be earlier than you think. I believe they made them from the early fifties to the mid sixties. The style and finishings on this one suggest an earlier example, so I'd say fifties for this hat.

Qualità speciale in a green colour called Dresda. Talpa (longhair) finish. Size 57 with the overwelt brim at 5cm and the crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. Barbisio is definitely the maker, even though the name doesn't appear anywhere on the hat. I was actually sent two of these. I guess seller got a bit mixed up.

Qualità speciale in the green Dresda colour (I worry about myself :)). Size 57 with the raw edge brim at 5cm and the crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. This one and the next one have the nices felt of the bunch. Thin and sturdy, but not stiff, felt with a lovely hand. A lot like nutria felt. Lightweight too, weighing only 96 grams. I think this one is a keeper.

Qualità speciale in the a grey colour called mendrisio. Size 57 with the raw edge brim at 5cm and the crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. Thin and sturdy, but not stiff, felt with a lovely hand, just like the previous one. A lot like nutria felt. And just as lightweight weighing only 98 grams. This one is a keeper for sure.

Wow! Apart from the fact that so many of them are green (I was also shocked, first making sure that I read the author of the post correctly and then checking whether you had a mishap and accidentally posted the same hat multiple times), it's really amazing that they are all in unworn condition: Fantastic! And I thought the days of old stock were over, but you keep surprising!
Btw: The top hat with the crown on top leads us to Ernst Köln as the wholeseller:

I'm talking about this Barbisio and the others of the same origin tha Stefan discovered.
I confirm they are by Barbisio and I believe they are from the second half of the Seventies due to the shape, colors and finishes. Those were the years in which the Sagliano Micca factory "chased" fashions rather than proposing new ones, but this was generalized in those years among Borsalino's competitors.
Great find and what intrigued me most is the marking of the hat and above all where it was supposed to be sold

Thank you, gentlemen. The price of these was just too good to pass up on them. The style and colour wasn't as clear from seller's pics as they are shown here. As Daniele points out, these are from the later period of Barbisio production. Still, I was pleasantly surprised by the Qualità speciale branded hats. Worth it for those two alone.

For $50 I had this Barbisio Sportex sent to me from Italy. These are the before shots I got. Before3.png Before2.png View attachment 700658 PXL_20250430_193103291.jpg

It was sent overseas in a bag with tissue paper. Once I received it, I was able to steam and rebash and I came up with the following:
PXL_20250501_000406733.jpg PXL_20250501_000346688.MP.jpg PXL_20250501_000235354.jpg PXL_20250501_000241226.jpg PXL_20250501_000250093.MP.jpg PXL_20250501_000419698.jpg
Does anyone have any ideas on the actual style name and age of this hat? Based upon the "Sportex" I assume it's a 1956-1960 era hat?

Nice find and probably older than you think. Sportex was introduced by Barbisio in 1933. Judging by the liner and the sweatband lettering I'd say it's more likely forties or even late thirties.

Just hitting like on the post is not enough. I REALLY like this response. I was unaware of Sportex and had only found it going back to the Olympic year of 1956. I was hoping to get a hat of the vintage you raised, though.

On an unrelated but still Barbisio-related note, I had seen before that modern Barbisios (or hats using that licensed name) had previously been made, not only in Italy, but also in Colombia. I have bought hats from the owners of that Colombian factory, in their Miami store, under the name they use for their hats, Puerto Fino. I was refurbishing one of those hats last night for resale on eBay and under the lining of the hat (mind you, a Puerto Fino sweatband and Puerto Fino-lined hat), I found a reorder sticker with the Barbisio label. I did not get a photo, but there it was.

As an aside from my aside, the lady of the couple who own Puerto Fino makes custom hats under her own name and sells from her store in North Miami Beach which just closed this week after almost 30 years. She has told me she is relocating the business to Atlanta, GA with a possible 2 locations. I do also know that her handmade creations carry the Puerto Fino label and use the same sweatbands. I do not know any more information about her husband and partner (who was profiled in the NY Times years ago), or the factory in Colombia.

Thanks, Stefan, for your assessment. I also initially considered the possibility of this hat being pre-war, based on the lettering. But then I decided against it, as the lining shows remnants of an onion skin (?), which I always assumed must be post-war, since I only have/know well-dated examples from the 1950s. Therefore, I would have estimated this hat to be from the late 1940s/early 1950s. Can you tell me when this often yellowed protective lining layer made of plastic (what is it actually made of) began to be used on European hats? Is there any evidence at all to answer this question?
