I'd say 50s too. It's gorgeous, and will look stunning with the cherry dress!

I think the bow headband could be a bit twee.

Thanks again for the help deciding I feel like I have a personal stylist I also wasn't sure if the bow would make me look like Minnie Mouse. Ok, just purchased the first one.

It wasn't that expensive either, so I hope it goes with the dress and shoes and that I can pull off the look. I was hoping to find a 40s hat but really love this one. Oh well, I still wear things I bought ten years ago, so maybe it's not so bad mixing eras as surely women must have done it back then .

Elastic waists

So, I have been seeing a lot of 50's dresses lately, especially shirtwaist ones, with elastic waists. Does anyone know when exactly they started putting them in, because some dresses I am 99% sure are actually from the 50's, but then I always thought elastic waists weren't really used much until the late 60's so I assume they are actually 80's does 50's?

Drappa, I assume you're talking about the ones that have elastic all the way around the waist. Those are definitely an '80s does 40s' revival. You can tell because they usually have giant polyester shoulder pads and/or a care label. I've never seen a vintage 50s dress, or a 50s revival dress, with an elastic waist. [huh] The only period dresses I've encountered with elastic waists were maternity dresses! Anyway, if you want the real deal be weary of the elastic waist dresses!!

I just found this on ebay, its very pretty and i decided to try and compare it to the the pictures in the 1940s wardrobe essentials thread, but it doesn't look the same. It says its a 40s swing coat.. what do you ladies think?

I would say 1940s but it reminds me of a maternity 1940s swing coat. A bit old for you IMHO.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I got a dress really cheaply recently and it was advertised as 40s and from a discontinued British label, but the finishing is definitely not 40s. I think it is actually 70s does 40s, so at least no big shoulder pads and polyester thankfully. It'll be good for walking the dog and kicking about the house though.

Egyptian coil jewelry

I have a bracelet and necklace inherited from my grandmother that i identified as "egyptian coil" they are most likely copper, but i can't find any information on this type of jewelry, there was just a listing on etsy for the twin to my bracelet. Any one know about them?

I have a 40s blouse pattern that calls for elastic in the waist, but I think it is still a good general 'rule of thumb' to be wary of a dress that seems 40s/50s, but has thin elastic in the waist. Always check for more clues, but it's not a bad one.

Make a triangle of your scarf, put it around your shoulders and then slip 2 ends thru the clip. Called a slide also.

Useful sort of person to have around!

Means I am still on the lookout for the elusive beltbuckle though.
