My girlfriend just invited me to a dinner dance TOMORROW NIGHT at the WALDORF ASTORIA(!) It's "Black tie optional". My tux somehow over the last several years has become too small for me. (Can't think how that happened . . .) Here's my question: If I wear a dark suit (which I don't like to do, but what they hey) she should wear a cocktail length dress, right? Not an evening gown, eh?
Thanks you, oh wise and all knowing Oz. Or FLers, or whatever.

I say get yourself over to Starstruck tomorrow and see if they can hook you up with a vintage tux, but if that's not possible, the dark suit will be fine. I've been to black-tie opitonal events in NY and usually only half are wearing tuxes, and of the ones that are, they're put together so badly they might as well be wearing tuxedo printed t-shirts. Nowadays, black tie, unfortunately, doesn't mean well-dressed.

Senator Jack

Blame the cleaners. lol

Why not take advantage of this opportunity to dress to the nines? It is the Waldorf, after all.

I agree. Go all the way. How often do you get to go full-tilt Beau Brummel? (Judging by the "fact" that the cleaners have shrunken your tux, I'd have to say, "Not often enough.")

Why, because you're good enough.

I agree with everybody else so far. Go buy a tux. Look for a single breasted with a peaked lapel. I've seen your post before. You've got a good taste level. You're not going to be happy there unless you're in formal attire. So put on the Ritz. And have fun.

He probably can't get it altered by tonight, unless he has an awesome tailor.

Well, we went, and I wore my nice dark brown suit WITH my newest vintage tie.
I'd say 80% of the men there were in business suits, since it was a weekday and they had all come from work. So I was pretty much with the program. The guy sitting next to us said he had just decided to go the day before (like me) and was in the City for business meetings. He went to Brooks Bros at lunch time, tried on a new tux, and told them he needed it altered in 2 hours. He went to his next meeting, came back to BB and voila! It was ready and he looked like a million bucks. So NEXT YEAR, I'll be ready with the single breasted peak lapelled tux (as per advice above).
And what a terrific time we had! It was the annual awards dinner for the Jewish National Fund, in (I think) the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria. What a place! One of the great Art Deco monuments of the world. They've been restoring a lot of the Deco detail over the last 20 years, and you can see what they've accomplished. Beautiful detail everywhere, murals, mosaics on the floor, etc. etc. And the food was EXCELLENT. I am a totally obese person at the moment, I'll have to fast for a week now. I didn't want to be TOO tacky and take hundreds of pix all over the place, but we did get one shot of us at the door, taken by the doorman. We strolled down Park Avenue and through Grand Central Terminal, and finally grabbed a cab on 42nd St. All in all a very wonderful and romantic evening in the Big Apple. I'll post the picture tomorrow. Night, all.

Well, it's not spectacular, but here are Dan and Daniele, after a very very lovely evening at the Waldorf-Astoria. Thank you, Mr Doorman for taking this pic.

And why couldn't someone have told me my tie was twisted? Oh, well. You can dress him up, but you can't take him out.
