Five Star Leather Jackets

@hughesovka this is a gorgeous jacket! Btw, is the horsehide chrome tanned?
I'm honestly not sure. It’s nothing like the Horween CXL on my Aero, besides the sturdiness. Here's a pic of the leather strip on the zipper showing the underside, I'm not sure if that tells you anything. The leather is fairly creaky, but it’s hardly been worn yet so I imagine that will subside. Movement is smooth, I was able to easily shoulder, aim, and hit my target with a rifle both unzipped and zipped.

Here's the rundown on the HH aviator finally (pardon the PJ pants, still at my dad's house on vacation). When i ordered this time, i was more exact in the measurements i sent shawn. I made sure to add a taper to the hem and a slight taper to the sleeves. I did love my grizzly from Shawn, but lack of additional input from me meant that it had a much more relaxed fit from my aero, and with a real set of bell-bottoms for sleeves. This time, Shawn did it perfectly. The fit is nice and trim, but i can still layer without restricting movement.
As for the whiskey horsehide, it's beautiful. I'm not as versed as many here in leather, but I know crummy leather and this stuff is nice. It has a nice solid heft to it, but it's really quite soft. The whiskey color is beautiful, a lot of the natural character of the hide is visible. The lighting in my dad's kitchen isn't really doing it any justice. I have a long way to go breaking it in, but i did wear it squirrel hunting with the dogs and the old man. All in all, this jacket proves the quality for value that Shawn is providing is still unrivaled as far as i know. Also i don't know how much whiskey horsehide shawn has, so you might want to jump on it

Also @Hobbes1 this one has the left side interior pocket like yours, which I'm not wild about but I can live with it

Now if the artisans in Pakistan could assemble a perfect replica of The Purdey-Beesley side by side, that would be a day to celebrate.
I think my father would agree

Sharp jacket, Hughesovka!

Are the outside photo's a truer representation of the color? Also I've heard Five Star's jackets can have a strong odor for a while....how is this one?

Thanks.

Ken
Yeah i think the outside shots show off the true color. It's definitely a bit of a chameleon depending on the lighting. As for the odor, i had also read that but the two jackets i received just had the normal pleasant leather smell. I certainly can't speak for anyone else though

Good to know, thanks!

Has anyone worn their 5 Star jackets in the rain? I'm wondering because Shawn told me that their jackets are not recommended for use in the rain due to the tanning procedure, even though the color wouldn't bleed. He did say that many customers have used them in the rain without issue but still said that they don't recommend using them in the rain. Thoughts?

Funny you ask ;-)

Five Star G1, goat, standard seal brown finish. To my eye, the top coat looks like an acrylic finish with, possibly, a sealant at the very top. No color running or bleeding in my experience. Their pullup horse hide and steer hide seem to have a non acrylic looking finish and I have not tried them in the rain, yet.

Haha nice! Nothing like throwing around some kettle bells in the rain.

Thanks @Nalazo . So it started as a total joke to try accelerating breaking in of the jacket. But after few workouts, G1 turned out to be the most comfortable top cover. It's warm, but not too hot, it completely shields the wind and in the rain, it feels breathable while keeping you dry. The biswing back design allows unrestricted movement. Also, the acrylic Five Star finish seems waterproof as the leather doesn't seem to noticeably soak up the water. This jacket has been in the rain about dozen times and all I had to do is wipe it down. I'll take it over PVC, polyurethane or teflon any day.

I was caught in a light rain walking back to my apartment last night and I noticed that the whiskey HH absorbed the water immediately, there was no beading or anything. I read earlier in the thread about someone having their brown pull up HH shrink after being soaked in a downpour, which would really suck if it's across the board for all the horse options. The whiskey aviator is cheap enough that I guess I'll just roll with whatever happens without getting too hung up, but it really is a nice jacket and I'd prefer if it didn't get screwed up by the rain

Hi, new member here. Been lurking for a while and decided to join. Just got an email and my first 5* jacket will be delivered next Friday.

Went with a Cafe Racer Road Master in black goatskin with a red cotton liner.

Ordering process and corresponding was easy.

I’d like to share pre delivery pictures of my distressed brown seal Cossack with regular collar.

Fleshing out more ideas, I'm envisioning doing labels for goat, steer/cow, and horse. This little project is stirring my imagination
