Five Star Leather Jackets

I’ll stick with Eastmans for my A-1’s and A-2’s.
My last two A2s have been Eastmans. 1401-P and 27752. Definitely sticking with Eastman.
Not only are you getting an A2 that is actually accurate in every single detail, but they are consistent in every single jacket you get. You don’t get either with five star.
Plus the difference in the appearance of the leather ….. well there is no comparison between the two.
There is a reason for the huge price difference.

The amount of wear my ELC jackets get justifies the price for me over the long term, now when I look at cheaper stuff and the quality of the leather I give it a pass and keep saving. ELC jackets get a lot of compliments from non jacket people too in my experience.

Over several years of wearing five star A2 jackets I have had maybe two people ask me about them.
Most people don’t have a clue what an A2 is.
But after only a couple of months of wearing ELC A2s I have probably had over a dozen people ask me where I got them from. Especially the 27752 in seal brown. They didn’t have a clue what an A2 was but they recognize beautiful high end leather when they see it.

Got my first custom five star in the seal brown steerhide a few days ago. Asked to use one of the cafe racer styles as a base pattern and provided specific measurements and directions for everything. Overall very satisfied for the price.

A few minor sizing issues that I'd want to fix on a second jacket (like taking it in on the waist and hem slightly) and some small QC issues like some stray stitch holes and creasing on the chest and back from how it was packed (hopefully it will relax over time), but other than that I think they did a good job. Based on the experiences of others in this thread I think I did fairly well for my first attempt.

Thoughts on the fit?

Looks great to me. What changes did you make from the stock sizing? I'm considering getting the same jacket but possibly in the premium goat.

Thanks! I had them broaden the shoulders, shorten the back length, and cinch in the waist and hem. I also provided fairly compete body measurements so they may have used those for other aspects.

I received an email overnight, it appears 5* intends to correct the error of my baggy-waist A-1. Their solution seems agreeable if I understand it correctly.

I’m excited again, I think the new capeskin is something pretty special at this price point. Full of character, grainy (how I like it) with no more restriction of movement than a windbreaker. Correctly sized, I can foresee many years of happy use.

If I may digress, there’s something about military-style leather that’s begun to appeal to me for everyday use. When I put them on, they have a comfortable informal feel. A better blend with how I dress.

I love vintage style half-belts too. They’re more tailored and complimentary to my shape, but tend to feel a bit dressy or ostentatious when getting groceries or walking the dog. I put one on and suddenly feel like I should tuck in my shirt and change out of my sneakers. Neither of which is likely to happen, ha.

The only custom success I’ve had was when I sent them a jacket that fitted well for them to clone .. denim trucker became a leather trucker.

I'm considering a custom order from 5 star....Vintage Cafe Racer in black goatskin with the collar added from the 30's Classic Cafe Racer. A poor man's Aero Seven if you will.

Is it still the prevailing opinion that the goat is the best hide to go with? There is a lot to parse through here on the lounge, but any tips on getting the best possible outcome is appreciated.
I ordered that same one but in their 1.4mm steerhide. Here's a pic of my 8 month old jacket.

I love mine now, it's my first real leather jacket but to echo our more experienced fellow loungers, I encourage saving up a bit more for a Rugged West/Schott/Vanson. But if you really want to try it, caveat emptor and take note of the negative experiences here. I had this taken to a tailor to dial in the measurements as over time I noticed some inconsistencies esp on the left and right sleeve tapers.

Be very specific on the measurements but as they say 5* can still mess up and even have some shady measurement photos based on some horror stories here.

Your Horween Veg HH is thicker than you'd think. Surprisingly it doesn't weigh a lot (in actual pounds/kilos) so it can be misleading about the thickness. Mine is also just 5.4 lbs but the thickness is there, at least 4.5oz, not 3.25oz.

Also the sleeves will need break in. Right now your 5Star is brand new so it looks like that but after broken in it will feel ok. I cheated and used mink oil. This leather is thick but gets soft and wearable after broken in.

Long shot from almost 3 yrs ago but what was the spec for your jacket? And how does it look like today???

anyone else have trouble with Five Star Leather communication? Im highly interested in buying a jacket and was communicating with them, but they've been ghosting me for nearly a week since I've sent them measurements and asked if it was possible. I'm worried about buying the jacket and then them ghosting further.

Could u expand further? Im hearing a 50/50 split on people saying they love it and people who have complaints about their customer service and product.
There's a reason this thread is 400+ pages. I don't expect people to go through it all. Probably smarter to let AI scrape this whole thread and give you some main conclusions / topics / reoccurring remarks. But overall they have proved multiple times that they are wiling to manipulate pre-shipping photos to make it seem like they stuck to your given measurements. And then "generously" offer you 50% off your next order to compensate for you not being happy with what you received. And that's just a few issues that you are likely to encounter if you go forward. 5* used to be a rather good risk-reward ratio, not so much anymore. It's not much better than buying Tailor Brando type stuff.

I tried that a couple months ago, it didn't work as the AI couldn't properly access the forum and its threads (honestly? Big W to TFL here). Perhaps with another AI/model/persona it would but, realistically, reading the last 5-10 pages and other threads around the lounge where 5* is brought up organically is good enough to get an idea.

Perhaps a good addition to TFL would be sorting by reaction score rather than only by date for scenarios like this one.
