Shipmates, Good evening. Was just wondering if I could get some sage advice from the G-1 collectors. Saw the following label on a jacket and was wondering if it was a 1960's vintage issue jacket: BUREAU OF AERONAUTICS USN FLIGHT JACKET INTERMEDIATE G-1SPECIFICATION NO. MIL-J-7823 (AER) L.W. FOSTER SPORTSWEAR CO, INC. CONTRACT NO. DA-36-243OM (CTM)2134 SIZE 46 Thanks in advance for the advice and counsel. Cheers, Mike
Hi mike. If you google , g1 jacket contracts , the Wikipedia page comes up and on it is a list of dates and manufacturers. I just had a quick look and the jacket you mention dates to 1951.
Hi, Mike. I'm not sure that you correctly read the letter on label, probably instead of O is Q here. My own LW Foster G-1 size 40 has contract DA-36-243QM(CTM)2134 as far as I remember is dated 1956 year, see att. label pics. When I bought this my G-1 jacket a year ago, I read about the dating of this contract from John Chapman here http://www.goodwearleather.com/pages/sale_foster7823_0001.html
I think the DA series started in 1953. The prefix before that was the "N" prefix. So, I would date this jacket at 1953 to 1961, not 1951 which would have been the "N" prefix.
