I have found flannel trousers very difficult to find and I finally had a local tailor find some heavy weight worsted flannel and make me 2 pairs. Not cheap, but I find most off the rack to be very thin material. I find the heavier weights both hang better and last longer.

Brooks Brothers. Get them now while they're still on sale. I bought both mid-gray and a lighter gray in a glen plaid with a light blue overcheck. $150 on sale through January 4th. Wore the mid-gray pair last night.

I ordered a pair of the brown flannel pants from J. Peterman. The cut is similar to my gray flannels from Zanella - reasonably high waist, full leg, etc. Detailing seems good. The fabric is nice, fairly heavy, but did hold some wrinkles from shipping. They're not quite in the same league as Zanella or Hickey-Freeman, but close. The 'brown' color is more of a neutral taupe - too bad, as they are exactly the same color as a pair of HF pants I have, I was hoping for actual dark brown. This is the real weakness of the Peterman website, with no photos, and mine are going back. Clicking through the banner ad here at the FL for 16% got the price down to $96, which seems about right.

BTW, I also ordered their herringbone tweed suit which is on sale. It's really nice - it has an old-fashioned cut and heavy, heavy tweed. I liked it so much I ordered their chalk stripe suit, which is even more deeply discounted. I had to go up one size on the jackets, and will be having the vents closed, but they seem worth the effort.

I got a great tip on a tailor in London who'll copy vintage trousers for £35. i had him make me some linen trousers last summer to a fishtail British 1930s pattern (copied a pair of Co-Op suit trousers from '35 or so), and he did a truly oustanding job. Sooo …

I've sourced some 14 Oz grey flannel and am having him copy a pair of original Oxford Bag style trousers. He's really good at copying complex waistbands so the side cinch belts should not prove a problem. I am also planning to try im out on copying a pair of 1930s British knickerbockers to go with a glen plaid suit jacket i'm having made by yet another London tailor. Since I don't own any of said 'bockers, i'll need to borrow some from a friend, but that won't be an issue.

I'll report here on the flannels.

So can anyone educate us on whether colored flannels are vintage? Usually you hear of greys and white.

My current flannels are the washable L.L. Bean model. The rise will just cover the navel, which I'm content with. Sure wish they offered more than one shade of grey, though. The others are navy, khaki, and a green identical to Akubra's fern green felt.

You wouldn't mind letting in on who this tailor is? I am rather hopelessly looking for trousers that fit me well, which leads me to searching for reasonable tailors.

To all the chaps wanting the London tailor, he does not do bespoke, just copies of existing pair of trousers. He is curt and unfriendly, and his work is not perfect. I'm trying to work with him to pay a bit more attention - pleats facing the wrong way for example - but it's an ongoing education for him. There's nothing wrong with the trousers, and they hang and are cut vintage perfect, but his buttons etc. are s**t (I replace them with vintage ones) and as I say the copying could do with a bit more attention to the smaller details.

For this reason I'm not willing to reveal him to anyone I don't know. I'm not going to be responsible for anyone being disappointed because he isn't perfect.

Fair enough...It's sometimes best to keep these things to yourself...£35 was to good not to ask though as I have fabric to be made up and a trousers that I love the fit of but that are gonna wear out soon!
