Canvasser in "Cosby Cap" Sought; Lounger Shows ID, Gets Apology
Yes friends, my newsboy cap made me very briefly a "person of interest" Monday afternoon. I'd just come out of my 1:00 class and was unchaining my bicycle when a campus police officer approached me and asked if I had university ID. I produced the card, but the officer did not immediately examine it.
It turned out someone had reported a guy with a credit card machine on campus, soliciting for a supposed charity. His only description was that he had on a "Bill Cosby kind of cap." I showed the officer my Dorfman Halibut Cap, indicated that I had been in class for the past hour, described my cap as "a golf or fishing cap," and reminded him of the ID he was holding.
He took a look, returned the card, and apologized. I placed the cap in my school bag, donned my helmet and pedaled off.
Just be aware that hats attract attention, sometimes in ways you can't count on.
