Whiskey explorations continuing. My first rye whiskey - Knob Creek. I watched a video saying these barely legal ryes were barely distinguishable from bourbon, but this is quite different from bourbons I’ve had before. A bit much burn for Etsuko, but I enjoyed it a lot.

It has my curiosity peaked as to what a real rye whiskey would taste like. The rye spices sound like something that would appeal to me. Recommendations please.
I had a bit more tonight while singing karaoke in my Christys’ trilby.

I haven’t had Knob Creek Rye, but I enjoy the Knob Creek bourbon. I expect the Rye is just as fine quality. The biggest difference in taste is that Rye has a higher percentage of rye grain than most bourbons, which are generally high in corn, and some use a good amount of wheat. I also like that spicy flavor palette that comes with a higher rye content.

Not being a Rye drinker I can only tell you what I know, without it being an endorsement or recommendation.

Templeton Rye, Templeton, IA predates Prohibition & has kept the little town alive & on the map thru tough times more than once. Templeton has quite a history & legend behind it being a supplier to Al Capone in Chicago during Prohibition. They “paid” for that legend in the yrs following Prohibition by finding licensing & distribution hard to come by. So I’m not sure about their international distribution & how easy it might be for you find a bottle today. But Rye drinkers take great pride in drinking Templeton.

Among craft whiskey aficionados I hear a lot about High West Distillery, Park City, UT & their Double Rye. I have tried a bottle of their bourbon & one of their Campfire Whiskey (blend), but not their Rye. Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey is another. Of their products that I like (excluding the ryes) I would give an edge to Stranahan’s. But again I know nothing about international distribution & availability.
