HOLY GRAIL? /What fedoras are you pining for?

Stetson 100's are the most common of the "100" hats. I have a Cavanaugh 100 (later model) but this Dobbs is from the 1940s so its a true vintage piece.

Actually, this Dobbs is a 1950s hat, so buyer beware. Still a nice hat. I watched it jumping in price all day and was half expecting it to hit $500.

I'm glad I stopped bidding when I did...Even if it was from the 1950's , a 100 hat from 60 years ago would cost 1000 .00 today so you could imagine the quality of the hat.

I would like to have a Knox 100.

I was looking through the Lounge for examples and even here there were only a tiny few of them. So, obviously the Knox 100s are pretty rare.

I'd also like to get a brown Stetson derby from the early 1900s (between 1900 and 1920).

I would also like to have a nice Stetson fedora in white. Don't care what model or quality level but it does have to have at least a 2-3/8 brim. The only white Stetson fedora I've ever seen for sale was a 2 inch brim one and that is too, too stingy for me.

Of course, that doesn't mean I'll turn any other fedora down! Ha, ha.

Fed, I can back you up, since I have a Knox 100: it is the single nicest hat I've ever handled. Whenever the weather is good, I wear it; it's too lovely a hat not to wear, but I want to keep it nice.

A Knox 100 certainly is a swell hat. Styling aside, I don't imagine there is any difference between a Knox 100, Dobbs 100, or Cavanagh 100 from the same year. They were made by the same company so it seems unlikely there would be any quality difference. I would like to find the precursor to the 100, a Knox Forty from the 1920's. The original Forty was a true silver belly hat and was made by the original Knox hat company.

Since Samuel's post and Buler's bump, I've read through this thread with interest. As most of you know, I haven't been at this but a short while, so maybe I don't know what my Grail is yet, but I've also amassed a halfway decent collection for a newby. Lately, I've been on the hunt for an OR, and recently found a nice, 1950s 3X Beaver OR that needed a little work, but turned out OK. My OR hunt has also turned up a nice Mallory Dallas and a Resistol San Antonio. So now, I'm keeping my eye peeled for a Stetson 25 OR or 7X Clear Beaver OR. From reading, it seems like the 100 would be too stiff for my tastes. My current "Grail" list:

I do not own a Strat of any ilk, so that's kind of top of the list right now. So no preference for color, but that will most assuredly change.
Stetson 7X Clear Beaver of any variety
Pre-Stetson Mallory, tall crown, wide brim
Cobalt Blue Homburg, no brand, but vintage
Pre-WWII Penney's Marathon
A quick walk around Steve's (Meyserwegener's) hat room while he's out of town. I'll only take one!
20s or 30s No. 1 Quality Stetson
This one I'm shooting for soon: A custom from Gus Miller at Batsakes in Cincinnati.
All the Daltons in my size. And maybe a few not in my size.

IMHO, 1950s Stetson 7XCB > Stetson 100. 1950s Stetson 25 very nice but not on same level as 7XCB. That being said, my 1950s Stetson 20s (Sovereigns) compare very favorable to the 25. I find very little difference in felt quality.

Everything I've read about the 100 is that they're very stiff and Western-y. I like more floppy, like a dress weight. So I think a 25 might hit that sweet spot. Certainly a 7X CB would!

I have 2 7X CB's, one is 50''s model & other is much younger. The youngster feels just like my 100 & they are both from the same period.
The older has been thru a refurb but I would not associate "floppy" with it.

I'd like a vintage Open Road or clone in something other than silverbelly or black. I like both, but a medium gray or a caramel-like tan or a dark brown would be dynamite. From some of the store ads we've seen posted here, the OR and a lot of its clones were sometimes available in a tan color, right?

Stiff or not, I still desire a Stetson 100 with my brim size (and head size).
Also clear nutrias, nutrias, 10's-20's no1 Quality... all with a biiiiiig brim and BIG FAT crown just like Alan's hats.
