Is there a thread that covers this? Below is the look I want, but I'm having a blonde moment and can't figure out how to tie it this way. Arrrgh.

I feel like a total idiot.

I just did an overhand knot on one end & thread the other thru that for the 2 & 3 ply ribbons I wear on this black Open Road...

The overhand loop is on the section that points to the front of the brim.
Major Moore should be able to give a more detailed explanation

gtdean48's ribbons look perfect to me, but thin, as well as wide, ribbons from manufacturers such as Akubra are actually two pieces.

The "knot" is a separate piece of ribbon wrapped around the hatband piece and stitched to it on the back side to look like it's tied. I suppose this is done to make the whole thing flatter and neater, or perhaps it's done for manufacturing efficiency.

It would seem easy enough to carfully tie a thin ribbon neatly, although a thick one could look pretty rough and "bunchy."

And we certainly don't want bunchy, now do we?
