I'm reading Piece Of Cake, and Robinson refers to the RAF jackets as 'Irvine' jackets. Is this a misunderstanding on the author's part? Or is there a reason he's calling them 'Irvines' instead of 'Irvins'?

the proper spelling is IRVIN.

I know that. Just wondering if Robinson does. ;)

I thought of posting it in Outerwear, since that's where the Irvin threads are; but since it's a question about a book and/or possible wartime usage I thought this might be the right place for it.

It's misunderstanding on the author's part. Although you even see RAF crew sometimes refer to them (erroneously) as "Irvines" in the odd letter and memoir. Then again they had bigger things to worry about than the correct spelling of their flying kit!
