The reply from Wranger on the Bluebells and '47's

Dear Daniel,

When VF Corporation purchased Blue Bell years ago they dropped the Blue Bell name. Our original Western jean is still sold in the US in Western speciality stores and on-line at Western venues such as Sheplers. The Wrangler 47 jeans are sold at high end boutiques. Please visit www.wrangler47.com in the next coming months for locations.

Sincerely
Wrangler Consumer Relations

Well that stinks. The PR person who answered your email is obviously an ignoramus. VF still uses the name in Europe and Japan--or at least they have licensed it to Edwin to make those repros--so why not here?

I think that the chances of Wrangler 47 jeans bearing any resemblance to actual vintage Wranglers are approximately equal to the chances of finding a stack of deadstock Blue Bell 11mw or 11mwz jeans on your next visit to the goodwill. It could happen, but it probably won't.

I gather you're not married. :eek:fftopic:

Actually you would be surprise if you hang them out every so often they really don't smell. I'm a two shower a day in the summer kinda guy and I was surprised at how much I've probably been over washing my jeans in the past. I used to throw'm in the weash after each wear. The one thing to remember is in the late part of the last 19 century and the early part of the 20th century there were few washing machines and jeans were work cloths. To get your LVCs to look like those originals wash as little as possible in my opinion.

Almost forgot Yes I am married and the Mrs is a total neat freak and would throw me out if they jeans got to rank. The only thing when I have a pair of raw jeans she wont let me near the living room furniture because of the blue bleed.

My biggest complaint about some of the Japanese repros are the weight and texture of the denim. I know a guy that has quite a few pairs of 40s and 50s originals some new/raw with tags and the red line cone mill stuff that levis was using in the 1990s and early 2000s was pretty close to the original stuff. There was just a pair of early 1950s original red lines on e-bay (sold for like 3 grand) and the denim looks allot like the early LVC cone mills stuff. 12 oz and not slubby like allot of the Japanese denim. Don't get me wrong I think the Japanese stuff rocks with the exception of those NUTTY gull wings on one particular maker. They also don't seem to get the placement of the cinchbacks right on the 20s and 30s stuff either.

Hey guys, long time reader first time poster.

I kept coming back to this site all the time and decided to post, as this is a subject thats a personal favourite of mine, as Im a bit of a jeans collector and like reading up on the 'golden age' of denim manufacture

I love the reproduction jeans styles just because of the cut that seems to work much better, with the normal/high-ish waist and the fuller cut on the thighs.

Also, when you manage to get hold of your first "Big 3" reproduction, you realise what crappy stuff you've been wearing in the past!!. Anyway, thought I'd post some pics of a little bit of my collection, most of them have been mentioned in this thread. Anyone has any Qs about how they fit etc, shout at me and I'll take some measurements.

By the way, these are all relatively high rise. (well in comparison to a modern 501)

sorry my camera's not great, the first ones a bit fuzzy and I just couldnt seem to get a good long range shot.

Ha ha!

Me too... which ones, the 11MW ?

super comfortable, which is unusual for unwashed jeans.
I actually am trimming down my collection a bit and am gonna sell some of unworn 'reserves' I bought... lol.... I was worried Wrangler might stop making them, so my brother and i bought a coupla spares, but I think that might have been silly in hindsight cos they dont fit now, and they are just sitting there and cant be worn after all that! lol lol

Hey,

Yeah they're kind of special editions. I dont want to bore you guys with the full technical stuff, (or patronise in case you already know) but, in a nutshell, they're reproductions that are exact replicas of the jeans Wrangler used to make in the 40s, 50s, 60s etc.

As far as I know, they tend to be made for specialist 'designer' (I hate that word, but you get the idea) stores in Europe.

Here's the website

I just listed some jeans on ebay that I swear were made for JC Penny's by wrangler. They are selvage and have the Talon zips. The thing that really tips me off is the back pockets. That have that same weave line that goes through the back pockets just like the Bluebell Wranglers you posted. They fit great in the waist but too short for me...maybe selvage shorts? ;) YOu can take a look at them here. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&item=270016097085&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1

Thanks for the link.

"Find a store by selecting your country."

Drat.

Damn...

Its kind of like us in the UK, loads of well known American brands are quite difficult to get here. Unfortunately, I think as one of the guys said earlier, once you translate the prices into the American dollar, they become quite pricey (I would imagine).

Oh, by the way I have seen stores in England selling those "20 buck wranglers in Walmart" for £60 (approx $120 US) !!!

But, I heard you can get the Levis reproductions quite easily in the US (from Levis website store too) so maybe that is another option. They are the classic vintage cut, most of them are high waist etc. Some of them even have the suspender buttons as Airfro shown, which I think are really classy. Maybe if you live in a big city, a store near you will have them, so you can actually try 'em on. If you need any recommendations on what the different cuts and style numbers mean, re: Levis I'd be happy to help. I have a few pairs.
