I know this is not WWII stuff, but I didn't want to intrude on the fedora forum because it seems wrong to post this style of headgear there, even though I have in the past. Anyway, while I was off fedoras over the last year, I got into USAF crew caps, as per previous postings I made during this "lost" year.
I decided to produce my second reproduction of a early fifties crew cap for based on pictures of ones worn by a B-29 crew. I chose the 509th Bomb Wing, the unit that dropped the first A-Bombs. They ended up at Roswell, NM. This is a Bombardier's cap, and the The triangle "C" refers to the 509th Bomb Wing, adopted ater the spearpoint in the circle symbol from the post WWII era. The "353" is the last three digits of an actual B-29 serial number from the 509th.
I used fabric paint on a swedish camo cap and replaced the visor from another cap I had. The fabric paint makes the hat feel like it's made from vinyl, so it will be a sweaty wear in hot weather, so I put in some vent grommets on the sides near the top.
To show you the style I was after, the first picture is from research I did to re-produce this cap. I would love to own an original. I would love to reproduce from the correct materials, hat identical to those in the first picture.
