I'm new to the forum and fur felt hats, I found a Beaver Brand hat for sale, are they good quality hats? It looks to have been a little manhandled but overall in good shape.

I don't think BB hats would be in the Exceptional category but they are good hats with a decent following here on the Lounge. I have an Open Road copy/clone I wear on a regular basis.

I think their niche was both as a lower priced alternative to the “big brands” and they specialized in making store brands. Their hats were not all of the same quality so it’s hard to talk about the brand’s quality. A “pure Beaver” hat is nicer than an “Fur felt, No other Fibers” hat. Also, a Langenberg hat from the 1940s will generally be much better than a Beaver Brand hat from the 1980s.
I own a few and I see them as unpretentious solid hats. If you like the style, and it’s a fur felt hat, they aren’t anything I avoid. Be aware that some of them use a fake leather sweatband that I for one dislike.

Spotted this today in a local vintage store. I almost bought it but for the pinch-hole...
Quality-wise, it's hard to believe it's so modern as the felt is way nicer than I associate with modern-ish hats. But, it does really have an Indiana Jones vibe to it, so I can see it being made around the early 80's.
I'm still tempted, Depp-hole and all, as it fits me quite well. But then again, my moths are getting too fat, don't need to feed them any more...

I bought a hat off Ebay a while back and it came with a hole punched in it from a price tag *** (in the brim). What ***** did that I cannot imagine. But I did have success fixing it. I had some matching colour felt strips from brim trimmings. Taking my leather hole punch I matched the size to the hole and cut a slightly oversized hole in the trimming to give me a plug. A very very light touch of glue around the edges, pressing it into place did the trick. I then used some felt scrapings from the hat itself and again with a very light application of a light consistency glue tamped the scraped felt around the plug to hide the seams. Being on a dark coloured felt makes it easier.....light coloured felts are much harder to hide the fix.

"Andrew Gross Custom Hatter was a downtown men's hat maker and repairer, in business for decades.
The business dated back to at least 1926, when it was Gross and Emanuel, run by Andrew Gross and Joseph Emanuel at 1225 Broadway. 1 By 1941, the shop had moved to 515 - 16th Street (in the Rotunda Building?), and Emanuel sold his share of the business to Gross. 2 In 1950, the shop moved around the corner to 1551 San Pablo Ave. 3
Andrew Gross continued in that location until the 1970s, when he sold the business."
