I have a 1990 BMW 325is that I've taken to hell and back and it's held up very well. I got it for $2,000. It was in good mechanical condition but the interior and exterior were hurting in the looks department. For ten grand you could find a real nice looking 3 series.

I know a bit about old jags, I've got a mint 65 XKE coupe. If your mechanically inclined they're great, otherwise they can be a money pit. You can get a decent XJ6 for 5K. E types start around $15,000. There are a few companies that drop chevy small blocks into XJ6, My wife had one that was much nicer than the one in the photo, had a vette engine, We sold it for $3500 about 3 years ago. Look around there out there. Get the most rust free example you can find. Body work cost a fortune.

Me...im a camaro man.
If you can wait till 2010 the new Camaro should be out. If it was here now, I would probably get that rather than the Bullitt. That is IF the new Camaro makes it into actual production. With the new so-called "energy" bill, the brief resurrection of the American muscle car may be soon snuffed out. Get 'em now while you still can before The Global Warming Faith takes over.

Check out the link of this Camaro SS classic. What a beauty.

I was thinking of a retro myself, but it would have to be more of a garaged kept hobby car like the SS in the link.

Test driving the 'stang was a trip back to the 70's. The Bullitt is only available in a 5-speed standard. I took it out on the highway on a test drive and when I got into 5th I was already going 105mph. Yikes! Thank goodness no police around and that the salesman let me take it out alone. The car wasn't even close to red line. The car should probably be illegal. I'm having the Bullitt fitted with some louver windows for that more authentic look, and will add a few kits for some added hp.

For the $10k requirement you stated. Yes, you can get an XJ series. Look at NADA or Kelly Blue Book online. You will need to be prepared to work on it yourself. The Jags have always had very classy lines.

There seems to be a preference here for BMW. IMHO the only BMW I have ever found attractive is the 635Csi, manual. If I find one in silver, that would make a worthy hobby car.

By the way, welcome home.

Completely different direction, but if you will be in a warmer climate, a soft top Jeep is a great fun car. Top down, doors off, one of the all time great convertibles!

Anybody own one of these?

I had an '85 380 SL. Great driver, got 20-ish mpg and lots of attention from the ladies. Even with the top down, wind buffeting isn't a big issue, which was surprising find. The hard top was an added bonus, although a pain to fit, and awkward to store.

Repairs on the Benz were expensive. Mine had 170k miles on it, and at 23 years old, many wear items needed replaced. I sold it when the repair costs started eating into the budget I'd designated for my project cars.

If you are interested in one, have a Mercedes specialist check it out prior to purchase. Be aware that earlier R107 SLs used a single-row timing chain, and if it breaks, you're looking at having to rebuild the motor. Like a Jag, the Benz is a stylish dependable cruiser that's best served with religious regular maintenance.
