Memphis Musical Fedora

Hi guys! Really new here, and wanted some information about a particular hat.

My favourite musical is Memphis and I'm trying to find a fedora like the one that Huey Calhoun wears, or at least one where I could change the colour or shape a bit.

I'm pretty sure that it's a black straw fedora, but other than that I'm not sure how else I could define it. I'm having problems trying to find one as pinched as that at the front.

Can anyone help me with the specs so that I can be more accurate in my searches?

It looks similar to the Akubra Punter with a modified crease and a different ribbon, but it could be a straw Trilby from just about any manufacturer.

Thanks a bunch!! Do you know how the crease could be modified? Would steaming work? It looks like it's been potentially altered on the inside, due the shadows cast near the front and middle on the first picture?

I don't own any straw hats, so you'd be better off getting advice about re-shaping one from a member who knows more about them.

Where can I find this style of Fedora? What is it?

Hey guys!

Just wondering if anyone can help me identify this type of fedora! I'm pretty new so don't know much about them and would really appreciate as much detail as possible! Thanks!

Suggestions for modifying a similar pre-existing fedora are welcome too!

I'm far from a hat expert and I'm sure one of the experts here can tell you exactly. The pictures did remind me of a Stetson Rockport.

If you're expecting someone to give you a link to the manufacturer and model, adjust your expectations. Thousands of countless hat model names and designations have been lost to the ages.

It's probably about 4 1/2" tall, which is just about standard for the blocked in creases. Nyah seems to be right on with the brim, looks about 2 inches to me. Can't tell if it's a natural straw or shangtung. Beyond that, there's not really that much we can tell you.

Didn't I see those same pics posted very recently on a different thread...? I agree w jlee562. There are literally thousands of very very similar hats like it out there, if not something so close you can say it's EXACT! Lol. Visit all the websites and you'll find it! Good luck.

That hat looks like the poster child for bad hat usage. It obviously got soaked from rain and dried misshapen due to carelessness and hat ignorance. When a hat gets soaked, the whole shape is at risk,. If the hat has a leather sweatband, turn it out and let the hat dry by resting the out-turned sweatband on a newspaper after reshaping the hat first and turning up the brim back and front if it has a snap brim.
If the sweatband is fabric, turn it out anyway and hang the hat on a peg or, if you must, rest it on the crown with the brim snapped up.
Even if you have a dry felt or straw hat with a snap brim, always snap it up all around and either hang it from a peg or rest it on the top of the crown.
If you do get a new Milan straw snap-brim fedora, get a vinyl hat protector in a size that matches the hat and the brim. They help preserve and protect the hat from moisture. Save you money and time.
You can also reshape a hat by holding it in a stream of steam from a tea kettle or clothing steamer, then reshaping bad areas by hand, then hitting it with more steam, then shaping some more.
This one, I think, is too damaged to reshape it by hand.
Some prefer to use a rain protector spray to prevent this. I wonder how well or if these sprays work on straw?
Anybody want to chime in here?

Probably. The Bartenders will occasionally move posts that would be better served in a thread that's more specific to the topic or question(s) being discussed, or even combine two threads that are discussing the same topic.

Thx Z. I never knew that. Personally I think that hat should be moved to the garbage. No offense intended.

I wouldn't go that far, even though the hat being discussed isn't one that I'd wear myself simply because Trilby's don't look good on me. EDL likes it and wants to find one, and that's all that matters as far as I'm concerned. [huh]

Tru Z. Hats just like that are all over the place... IMHO.
