The AA henleys are a good price, in the UK, at least. However, I found that their idea of XL, which is their largest size, differs from most other retailers. Presumably because they're for The Young and not The Old.

I wasn't too impressed with the construction. Maybe it's better quality on the other side of the Atlantic. The seams were ragged, with way too many loose threads and buttons not so securely stitched on. Otherwise, fine.

On thermals, try Hanes or Jockey. Also, have a look at Merino wool crew necks. They were once only in the outdoors shops, but are increasingly available in mainstream stores. Merino is lightweight and doesn't smell as bad as quickly as clothing made from man-made fibres.
