...still interesting nonetheless.

This is a Model 1863 American Civil War holster I got a couple months ago for $20. The seller had no idea what he had. It's next to a 1944 dated .45 holster for comparison.
It's not named or ID'd but is in good condition. The only problem I see with it is the carry loop on the back is partially torn. The leather is excellent. A real piece of history, you can still see the outline of the gun where the cylinder sat. :)

The US civil war...

...almost a 'forgotten war' these days...sadly...

Yet it claimed more lives on the north American continent than any other conflict before or since. And, divided a nation.

Please learn from this and don't take unification for granted. It was a horrific conflict and fought at grass roots akin to the Crimea or Waterloo.

You have clinched a piece of your country's history in a small piece of leather. Well done!!!

Depends on where you live Paddy...

Over here in the U.S. it all depends on where you live. I am a proud native Virginian and must say that in most parts of the state, the War of Northern Aggression (a.k.a. American Civil War) is definitely not forgotten. Perhaps because so much of the war took place in Virginia, it is a rich yet tragic part of our heritage.

That's a fine holster you found. I hope you have a nice Colt black powder pistol that could be paired with it.

And to some of us on the "winning" side have not forgot this war.
Home the 1st Minnesota, a unit the held the line at Getteysburg and helped to break the reb's charge, after the battle only one in ten men were fit for duty.
Oh Great find on the holster I was thinking a Colt Dragoon would look nice

Up here, at least in these parts the Civil War is mostly forgotten. Once in a while we'll have a CW reenacting group come by but few people ever get out and see them. Even in Virginia, where it is part of their history and people remember it, battlefields are being covered over by development. The book "Confederates in the Attic" is an excellent read if you want to know the modern day affects of the Civil War.
The fellow who built my house was a CW vet and I'm told I have an ancestor who died in the Andersonville prison camp.
