Weaving Life: On the Panama Hat’s Trail across Ecuador

    Katharina Rau, Brunel University

The Panama hat is one of the world’s most famous hats, but there remain only a dozen weavers in Ecuador who can make it. This film tells the stories of the makers and sellers of the Panama hat, and it reveals the history of the hat itself and its significance within Ecuadorian culture.

"A Hungarian Artist and a collector per excellence, Olga Fisch immigrated to Ecuador in 1939 and soon recognized the vast potential of the folk artisans of Ecuador. She was a humanist visionary, whose main attribute, in her own words, was to "know how to recognize quality in a work of art ". She began working with indigenous artesans, throughout the country drawing upon the artists`visions of their natural world and helping them to refine their artistic expression to bridge the gap between folk art and traditional fine art."

Seeing the issue of Montecristi fino apellation control at the ECUADORIAN MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE'S SITE ....exactly the authority and the level where this subject should be handled. Finally, a change will come????

    http://www.sica.gov.ec/agronegocios...organicos/seminario/propiedad_intelectual.htm

    Dated: March 2008

The trailer features the character of the missionary Frater Geoghagen 0:40-44 and 1:35-1:36.
He wears a Superfine Montecristo - in the movie there are longer sequences with him.

Don’t you think I watched that action thriller too often????

We're hearing of a plan that may involve building an oil refinery near Montecristi. One seller seems to think it will kill the Montecristi hat industry. I know from experience that a typical wage in Ecuador is about $300.00 a month or less. Why would anyone who makes hats that are sold for $8000.00 or more even think about leaving such a cushy job for such a pay cut?

That is a kind of news where one eye laughs and the other cries…

    :eek:fftopic: ? Or political?
I believe that this project will turn the region upside down.
It will affect the weaving industry as well – weavers and their children leaving to work in the supporting, servicing, infrastructure etc. jobs. It is more relaxed to sit in front of a security camera than to hunch over a weaverbank.

The pollution and the hazard of major environmental accidents (pipelines) will increase despite whatever is promised and the environment (toquilla plantations) will be also affected.

What the weaver lady told was basically that the cottage industry prevails mostly due to the absence of other job opportunity for locals – if the new employer appears on the job market this will change.

It might happen that weavers will weave besides the 21st century plant like in a Skanzen but in any case, the salaries really must raise to keep the weavers weaving.

It really depends on how well they integrate this large project into the region, how dirty the applied technology will be...lots of variables.

Tom, exactly! If one would have been taking care of ALL of the weavers for the past 20 years, they wouldn't think twice about leaving. This irks me more than anything. Several people mark their hats up thousands of percentage points, and have been doing so for years, yet they only get moving when something will come to hurt them at home.

Ms Robertson said while celebrities were the main influence, disgraced former WA premier Brian Burke had helped make the panama style hat popular since wearing one during his CCC hearings.

“ We have so many people who come in to buy a panama and I have never heard a name as often as his when referring to the panama hat,” she said.

“People come in specifically asking for the Brain Burke-styled panama.”

    Burke-styled Panama:
