Doc, what a great hat! I bought a hat from the same sellers, ask them where ceviche is from!

Don’t forget to put it on the Cavanagh thread, for better record keeping and information management.

Great hat! A 30s Cav! Nice hummingbirds in the background :)

Cavanagh Hunt Club

I really didn't expect to like this hat sooo much. Wow! Magnificent, soft felt. Yes, I'm gushing.

I had seen it on Etsy for several months, but didn't really pay attention to it, because I dislike the "Gay Prince" style brim stitching and felt ribbons.

Brent, aka @deadlyhandsome sent me a PM about its rarity, so I took a closer look. I figured Brent would know more about rare hats than I did, and I was correct. I hadn't even noticed it is a John Cavanagh, Inc..

Here is some info copied from the CityVintageClothes listing, owned by Roberto and Jula Isola.
To my mind, they tend to offer the best hats on Etsy. Although they certainly aren't shy with their asking prices, I think for once this hat was worth more than what I paid for it, IMHO.
Most of the pictures are from their listing.

Do those more knowledgeable than I on the history of hats (most everyone here, I know) concur that it is a 1930's hat?

Ah! I hadn't thought of that. I will, Daniel. Ceviche is from Acapulco, of course, but there are plenty of copy-cats in South America.

Which hat did you buy from Roberto and Jula?

Hummingbirds?

Nice one, looks unworn. Is it a size too big for you?

Thanks Joao. I wear a 60 and sometimes a 61. This is a 62. Works if I wear a bandana under it (and I have all the colors in the world as I collect these as well), but not sure if I can pull of the look or it would be worth it. Maybe something along these lines...

I found a 4-inch brimmed Bailey One Hundred, Joao (first and second pics). It is on its way to Texas right now, so I will have to wait 'til my next visit to retrieve it.

All the rest of the pics are of the haul I just got back from Texas.
I had to leave the two I liked the least (Goodwill finds), but I was able to pack 40 into my three carry-ons.

We were supposed to be allowed only two, but the flight attendants were Mexican, the flight was nearly empty, and I can be pretty persuasive in Spanish.

I was also able to pack the three leather cases into the rest of my luggage, which was fortunate because the resulting lack of space restricted the ammount of stuff Ana could buy in McAllen's stores. [emoji5]

Good heavens, Max. That's some haul again! What hat is the grey one front row right?

S. J. Frankel Wien "Sirius 1/2 Et.", 57cm, date stamped 01/06/1959. The felt is a dark navy blue with a smooth finish. The overall workmanship is fantastic and I really like the form plus mid ribbon width. Also fits fine even though 57cm and in excellent condition. The color should look better in natural light.

Again, great hat, Steve. The outside shots show off the colour very well.

Should I be looking in our classifieds for this? It’s a beauty!

BobHufford: That's a beauty. Can't really see the bandana.

See there ya go. Now you can wear it and not look well....like a BG clone.

Man, that is too bad that is a nice looking hat.

Not that bad.

Thanks everyone. The jury is still out (although my wife says "sell it" ... so ...). :(
