Recent acquisition that will go back out as it doesn't fit. Marked 22-3/4" circumference behind the sweatband (and appears to have been built by Rich Rand). It had a hat pin dated 1979 on it. I'll look behind the sweat again when the conditioner soaks in. Some unfortunate mothing, but nice otherwise.

Bought this hat on Etsy and didn't know it was a Rand until it arrived today. It's an 8X and I think it may be their Drifter model, or basically the same as, style-wise. Made in 2001. 4 inch brim, 6 inch open crown.

Rand's 8X, 3 inch brim. I think the date is 1992, shown as 3/92, I think.

What is your opinion on the felt and build quality?
I think it's a great hat. Great felt quality, much softer than the first Rand I bought. Guess they're just 2 different types of hats, but I love them both. Enough so that I just bought a third Rand's that's on the way to me. I didn't get any of them dirt cheap, but paid a lot less than if they were new, that's for sure.

I follow them on FB and admire many of their styles and as to their restoration work i think they perform miracles. I have yet to drop into their shop as each time I pass through Billings I seem to be in a hurry to get somewhere else. One day!

The hats I've gotten from them have all been virtually like new. I like the feel of a solidly built hat, and that's how they feel. The closest vintage hats I have that give me that feel are my 30's and 40's era Nutrias and real high-end hats, and a few others.

I have several Rand hats varying from 7x to 8x to 100%. In past days, an 8x was 80/20 beaver/hare. But I think they've changed that up some in recent years. My small collection of Rands features a couple of 100% beaver and a few 8x, plus one 7x. They are all fantastic quality felt and made to withstand the elements, endure a hard day's work, and last a couple of lifetimes.

2000 Rand's 8X "Diamond Jim". 3 3/4 inch brim, 5 1/2 inch open crown. Spotless, looks like never worn, under $200 for a Custom Rand. A no-brainer.
