Remember the Chairman - 10 Years Ago Today, 14-May-1998

Folks,

Ten Years Ago today, Frank Sinatra, or the Chairman as some knew him by left us. I know that there are some folks that don't like Frank or his music, but there are some of us that do. So for those of you Loungers that do, please have a drink today (only one bad boys and girls...it's a school night) and remember Frank.

I like this Youtube video quite a bit. I hope you do.

FYI, in Vegas it has been declared that May 14th be Sinatra Day. They're honoring him on the strip right now.

In any event, beyond the current hype, pesonalities, media events, what we have left is a great entertainer and talented artist. I think it's waay too easy to not see the considerable skills it took to produce the songs he did.

I have a couple of very fond memories that were set to a Frank Sinatra soundtrack. He was great and a one-of-a-kind.
I'll raise a glass to Frank and I hope he will be remembered for a long time as "Chairman of the Board". :eusa_clap

I love the stamp they designed in his honor. Not a week goes by that I don't listen to one of his songs.

I'm not a big fan of musicals, and more appreciate his general sense of style than his musical talents; even so, I think he did a great job in straight dramatic roles (From Here to Eternity and The Manchurian Candidate stand out imo). And there's no question just adding a Riddle-era Sinatra tune instantly transforms a film - notable exampls being Summer Wind at the end of "The Pope of Greenwich Village", and "Witchcraft" over the opening credits of Scandal. You hear that sound and it's like a nice smooth sip of really good bourbon rolling over your mouth...

I bought some stamps yesterday and also bought the CD that just was released and saw the 1965 special "A Man and His Music" on DVD so I bought that too. I recorded the special from PBS but that was 10 years ago. So I'm glad I've got it on DVD now.

Side two of the (too many?) compendium album(s) just ended here on my turntable. As a teen in Philadelphia, I listened to Sid Mark's "Friday with Frank" and "Sunday with Sinatra." A gifted artist, without a doubt, though I think in his later years, he made some questionable choices in terms of material. Hearing "Send in the Clowns," "In the Wee Small Hours" and "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" almost side by side cements that for me. Folk/Pop to big band? Why? OK, the subject matter (a bad guy in Chicago) might be Frank's thing, but...

I'll give him a pass on "Something," since it is at least a love ballad.

I am currently making my way through "Your Brain on Music" and the author mentions, in glowing terms, Frank's phrasing on the album "Songs for Swinging Lovers."

Listened to the Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim album to commemorate the sad day...


But, what a fantastic record!!

I love the Sinatra comment in the liner notes " I haven't sung this softly since I had the laryngitis..."

Church of Sinatra / Vintage Music Appreciation Evening Went Well

Folks,

Church of Sinatra and Vintage Music Appreciation Evening went rather well tonight. We had a good turn out and we were able to listen to The Chairman even though one of my tubes in my Schaub-Lorenz is starting to go. I hope there will be other folks that will be able to come next time.
