Flash Gordon and Shintaro - The Samurai
Loved them as a kid, used to get up early on Saturday mornings to see what adventures Flash was up to. I think "Shintaro" is responsible for my love of Samurai books and movies.

Im confused by the term serial? Is that a more classic term for series?
Does that mean old radio shows put on DVD format, or old TV shows, or both?

We're talking about cliffhanger serials which used to shown at the cinema. Usually on a saturday morning. Right now some very kind people are releasing them on DVD.
