As down and out as he looks, his hat looks pristine. Does pride in oneself began at the top?

He's standing beside what is now Highway 29 in the Napa Valley. If he wasn't in the picture you might not be able to tell when it was taken, although these days the highway is lined with wineries. I agree that it looks like he may well have treasured that hat.

They were hiding in and amongst those great mid-fifties flat top Milans. Be still, my heart!! I love that era...

This sort of shows the tipping point of the non hat wearing fashion. If one took this picture today the dress would be much more casual for sure.
