If I had his hat I would wear it as is! Bibs are the only thing I ever saw him wear. I have a great memory of running trot lines with him.

Cowboy Teddy Blue Abbott and (at right) Charles Russell in 1919. Abbott's memoirs inspired the book Lonesome Dove.

I thought this was an interesting photo taken in 1925 at the Reunion of the Old Trail Drivers Association at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio. Seated is Texas rancher Charles Goodnight. Standing left to right: Gutzon Borglum-sculptor of Mount Rushmore, photographer Erwin Smith, and West Texas Cowboy Blake Alexander. Charlie was a tough old bird and I like his hat.

Some interesting hats in this photo. Several Boss of the Plains in the foreground.

I like all those old photos of real cowboys. I have noticed, that they aren't quite as picky about their crown treatments as we seem to be!

No hat but posting this pic as it is rare. Missouri Partisian Ranger John Nichols shown shackled in ball & chain on the day he was executed, 1863.

I like this photo too. It's been posted somewhere here before, and every time I see it I'm puzzled by the gent behind the bar wearing what appears to be a modern ball cap.

Yea I think it is short bill cap so it probably isn't too modern, but maybe early part of the 1900's is my guess, but I could be wrong. :)
