Mate what a tragedy! I don't think I've ever seen a vintage Akubra like that. What a shame!

I had a guy offer me $250 for this 1940's akubra last week, so i took it out of the sealed plastic box i put it in less than a fortnight ago...moths had got in, dunno how, and butchered it..UNBELIEVABLE..it had been sitting on a hat- View attachment 171422 View attachment 171422 View attachment 171423 View attachment 171424 rack untouched for the last 3 years at least...seriously WTF...

That really *****. Maybe the sealed box somehow created an ideal incubation environment for moth larvae that the open air never provided.
I remember as a child people having a cedar lined closet to store their out of season wool in. I guess the rise of synthetics made them somewhat obsolete. Is there something about fur felt that makes it a prime moth target? I've stored wool overcoats, suits etc. and its never been a problem. One time we got tired of constantly having to vacuum large woolen rugs that covered the tile in our dining and living room. Our dog at the time shed horribly and if you didn't stay on top of it in no time it would require crawling around with a brush in one hand and a shop vac hose in the other. The dining room one was particularly large but I managed to fold it over itself until I had a square about a meter wide and half as thick which I wrestled up the stairs to our walk in attic. A couple of years later I pulled it down and moths had destroyed it, creating a very large hole and weak area that was beyond repair. But that's the only time moths have plagued me despite owning wool garments, and even wool hats.
Now you have me frightened. What does one do to ward them olff?

they are vicious round here, i had a vintage borsalino eaten while it had mothballs sitting on the crown..the only safe place to store hats in this climate is in a freezer

We get one or two seasonal invasions of Miller moths in Denver. When you get into your car they fly up from under the dashboard on a heavy one.

The liner & sweat are both excellent. I really think this hat was hardly worn, boxed & forgotten about. That's how it came to get so moth riddled. I would remove the sweat & send it to you Bob, but it's only a 7-3/8 & would require some "secret service" to fit you.
