Back around 1920, silk business shirts (usually striped) became very popular with men. The fashion survived into the early 1930s, when the Depression kicked in and did away with it.
Silk shirts became popular again with American men during and after the Korean War. Servicemen could have them made cheaply in Japan and Hong Kong.
