Over the weekend, I saw the DVD in which the BBC orchestra plays and k.d. lang sings various songs.

When they did Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, it brought down the house. I just about flipped out.

Good Gal by Old Crow Medicine Show. I loved the music and the lyrics had me pulled in from the beginning... and then the end threw me for a loop but let a chill running through me. Excellent song.

Well she drug me down
Tossed me 'round
Slammed my name all over town
My good gal ain't no good to me
She makes true love more like misery

Now I'm walkin' hunched
I get drunk a bunch
So would you sucker up and take a punch
My good gal ain't no good to me
And I think I've acted reasonably

Ah, but I miss her
And all that I wish from her

Is the time of day
Don't go out of your way
Just a-leave me with a stack of them bills to pay
My good gal ain't no good to me
And she don't have the courtesy

To shut the door
When she's been playin a whore
I don't wanna see his rags out on the floor
My good gal ain't no good to me
And I only wish that she could see

That I miss her

Ah, but I miss her
All I have is a picture... of her

It was taken years ago
I was a kid, you know
Just a-leanin' up against that El Dorado
My good gal ain't no good to me
And the final word belongs to me

Because I drove her out of town
And I shot her down
And I left her there in the cold, cold ground
My good gal ain't no good to me
Not even in her memory

Listen to "White Crosses" by Edwin McCain, a truly fantastic songwriter. It is the true story of Hispanic imigrants that die from heat exhaustion as they try to enter the states in the back of the trailer of an 18 wheeler in California. Very moving regardless of how you might feel about illegal imigrants and its associated issues.

tortswon, Mr. Waits has got so many poignant gems of songs, one could get lost in the choosing.

And EmergencyIan, you may have to change your avatar; some of us ladies might get all swoony over Johnny Gage (my first tv crush) ;).

The Pearl Fishers Duet by Bizet always brings the hairs up on the back of my neck. Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams always chills me and brings a tear to my eye and La Musica Notturna delle Strade di Madrid by Boccherini never fails to make me smile.

It is not a period song, but the song by Dj Sammy - called Heaven / Candlelight Mix always gets me, especially when it was set against the Twin Towers

I cannot access You Tube where I am because of the firewalls but I think this is the link if you have not heard it before

Here's another gem from Tom Waits that fits the bill. Best, Sam

I love this particular performance of A Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12qBoy2rhVw, I love when he inserts a little bit of Going Out of My Head in there, so sweet

Tom Waits - I'll never love another man!

And this rendition of Mr Siegal is haunting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKbu4b2TTZo The recording on Heartattack & Vine is all raunch and sleaze (and my currently most listened to Waits song!) but this live version gives me chills

Boy the Lounge is a goldmine of likeminded Waits fans!

I see this thread has not been active for awhile. I thought this would be an appropriate place to mention that today, November 10, 2010, is the 35th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

RIP

"Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" always scared me when I was a kid, because it was like a ghost story.

35 Years today.

For me, I'd say And So It Goes and Piano Man (I think it's quite powerful, and relates to a lot of situations in life) by Billy Joel, and More Than a Feeling by Boston. All I can think of right now.

Edit: Started reading at the beginning, and totally missed CharlieB's post. Whoops.

Simon & Garfunkel's Sound of Silence and 7 O'Clock News / Silent Night also.

Anything sung by Jane Pesci-Townsend, or In a Very Unusual Way, which I associate with her.
